Shen Du leaned out of the car window, the slender figure illuminated by the streetlight stretching into a long shadow. When he recognized the girl's face, he was momentarily taken aback, but then he opened the car door and stepped out.
"Yao Nian?"
Seeing him approach, Yao Nian stood up awkwardly and brushed off her skirt. As soon as she opened her mouth, her expression became somewhat conflicted. Shen Du looked young enough that it wouldn’t be appropriate for her to call him "uncle," but calling him "brother" felt odd since he was a friend of Yao Zhandong, placing them in different generations.
Shen Du chuckled lightly, "You can call me uncle."
Yao Nian fidgeted with the hem of her skirt, "Shen Uncle."
"What are you doing out here alone?" He glanced around. "Isn't Yao Zong with you?"
Yao Nian suddenly hesitated, "He had something to do and left."
Shen Du nodded, his gaze gentle. "Where are you headed?"
In truth, she had just promised Xu Jiayi that she would go to a newly opened place after the graduation banquet, but for some reason, she blurted out, "Home."
Shen Du shook his car keys. "Then let me give you a ride home."
Yao Nian was taken aback and didn’t move. "That’s too much trouble for you; I can go by myself."
The man walked straight to the front of the car and opened the back door. "It's late, and it's not safe for a young girl like you to be alone. Don't worry; I'm not a bad person."
Since he had said that, Yao Nian felt that refusing again would seem pretentious. As she got into the car, she mumbled softly, "I didn’t say you were a bad person."
Shen Du took the driver's seat and started the vehicle, reminding her, "Buckle your seatbelt."
Yao Nian wasn’t used to fastening her seatbelt in the back seat, but since Shen Du said so, she obediently secured it.
Shen Du's car was from a low-key brand, and the interior exuded a faint mix of wood and leather scents. There were no random decorations on the central console; like him, it radiated an air of understated elegance.
She shifted her gaze to the driver. The man drove steadily; even when cars cut in front of him or braked suddenly, he remained calm. Unlike Yao Zhandong, who would instantly transform into a master of national essence as soon as he sat down in a car.
Shen Du glanced at the rearview mirror and noticed that the girl was staring at him without moving.
"Um?"
Yao Nian blinked, looking at Uncle Shen. "Can I ask how old you are?"
Shen Du seemed taken aback by her question. "What's the matter?"
"I'm just curious," Yao Nian replied. "You look young, not like someone from my dad's generation."
"I'll take that as a compliment," Shen Du chuckled. "You just graduated this year, and I'm exactly a decade older than you. Besides, age doesn't matter when it comes to making friends. You're a good person, Yao."
Yao Nian pouted, choosing not to respond to his comment. Although she disapproved of many of Yao Zhandong's ways, she hadn't yet developed the habit of criticizing her father in front of others.
Outside, waves of heat rolled in one after another, while the air vents in the car released a cool breeze that felt like a gentle wind rustling through leaves, softly caressing her skin and making every pore in Yao Nian's body relax.
As Shen Du took a turn and drove into a familiar area, Yao Nian suddenly realized she hadn't told him her home address.
She leaned against the window and asked, "How did you know I live here?"
"Jiangling Villa," Shen Du replied. "I had the fortune of visiting once before."
Seeing the puzzled expression on Yao Nian's face, he continued to explain, "At that time, you were probably still at school preparing for your college entrance exams."
Shen Du glanced at the girl through the rearview mirror and discreetly flipped over the name tag on the passenger seat.
Not to mention bringing guests home, even Yao Zhandong himself was rarely at home; he spent at least three months a year away for work. So if he invited family over, they certainly weren't just ordinary friends.
At that moment, Yao Nian's phone suddenly vibrated in her hand.
It was a message from Xu Jiayi. Without thinking much, Yao Nian tapped on the ten-second voice message.
Xu Jiayi's raspy voice came through the speaker, accompanied by some background music: "The booth is all booked! Hurry up and come over! We’re sitting next to a bunch of tall athletes; don’t miss out!"
Yao Nian's hand trembled as she held her phone, quickly pressing the lock screen button.
Xu Jiayi's voice was abruptly cut off.
