"Is this really for me?" Yao Nian scoffed, realizing that all the guests were just his friends. It felt more like a tour as they moved from table to table, toasting. Have you ever seen someone throw an adult ceremony for their daughter and take her to a club?
Xu Jiayi crossed her arms and looked at her. "So, you better come clean. What were you doing all that time you left me hanging tonight?"
Yao Nian had no choice but to recount everything that had just happened in detail.
"That uncle is quite warm-hearted," Xu Jiayi remarked. "You’ve been so evasive with him, yet he didn’t even get mad."
Yao Nian shot her a glare. "Who was evasive? If you hadn’t sent that voice message out of the blue, I wouldn’t have been in such an awkward position!"
"And now you're blaming me?" Xu Jiayi retorted. "You’re ridiculous! When he asked where you were going, couldn’t you have just told him directly? Why go around in circles and make him drop you off first?"
Yao Nian tightened her grip on the wine glass. When Shen Du asked where she was going, she instinctively blurted out "home." She didn’t even know how to explain her erratic thought process.
"Ah!" Yao Nian suddenly exclaimed, standing up. "It's almost midnight; I need to get home."
Xu Jiayi paused for a moment, looking at her as if she were an old man on the subway checking his phone.
"It’s only eleven-thirty, sister. You’ve barely warmed your seat since you got here!"
As Yao Nian opened her ride-hailing app, she replied, "It’ll take about twenty minutes to get home. I need to be back before midnight."
Reluctantly, Xu Jiayi stood up. "I can’t believe this. Did you drink some obedient girl potion tonight?"
When Yao Nian got home, it was still not yet midnight. The villa was pitch black. Habitually, she turned on all the lights, and the spacious living room instantly brightened.
In reality, as long as she closed the door, no one would know if she spent the entire night away.
On the afternoon after the college entrance exams ended, Yao Nian hadn’t even had a chance to share her joy when she walked in and saw two large suitcases sitting by the entrance.
Qiao Shuzhen was wearing a light pink floral long dress and a wide-brimmed straw hat that covered most of her face. With her exquisite makeup and long wavy hair cascading down to her shoulders, she looked nothing like someone in her forties.
"Nian Nian," she said softly, "Mom is getting a divorce from Dad."
Yao Nian wasn’t surprised by this news; they had been living separate lives for a long time now. Yao Zhandong’s affairs were hardly hidden.
The fact that Qiao Shuzhen waited until after the exams to leave this home was already the greatest attachment she had for Yao Nian.
But she really wanted to ask one thing: why wasn’t she taken along?
Those two suitcases didn’t seem capable of holding both their lives.
Qiao Shuzhen bent down and hugged Yao Nian tightly. A strange perfume enveloped her; it was no longer the familiar Chanel No. 5 she used for over a decade. It felt as if she had shed all ties with Yao Zhandong and was reborn anew.
"You’ve grown up now," Qiao Shuzhen said gently. "Mom is starting a new life too, but remember, no matter where I am, I will always love you."
After a month, Yao Nian often stayed out late with Xu Jiayi, not caring about returning to the house that had no warmth. Xu Jiayi even teased her about her rebellious phase arriving late but finally making an appearance. In any case, no one paid attention to her late returns or absences, but today was different.
Yao Nian quietly opened the chat window with Little Cat Fishing and pondered for a moment before sending a message to Shen Du.
"Uncle Shen, I’m home now. Thank you for tonight."
She didn’t want to treat Shen Du as an elder, so she deliberately avoided using the formal word. The message was sent precisely at ten o'clock. Yao Nian thought he should be asleep by now, so she placed her phone on the bedside table to charge and headed into the bathroom to wash up.
