Yao Nian rubbed her face and deliberately slowed down as she pulled out a pair of white sneakers from the shoe cabinet. The Lexus was parked in front of the villa, and just as Yao Nian was about to open the car door, she hesitated for a moment, took two steps forward, and opened the passenger door instead.
With a hint of surprise in his eyes, Shen Du watched her. Yao Nian cleared her throat and explained seriously, "My mother once said that when there are only two people in the car, unless one is a leader, sitting in the back seat is disrespectful to the driver."
Shen Du paused slightly before turning to her with a smile. "Your mother is right. However, I want to remind you that it's even more important to buckle up in the passenger seat."
The vehicle started smoothly and soon drove out of the Jiangling villa area. Noticing Yao Nian rubbing her arms, Shen Du adjusted the air conditioning temperature up by two degrees.
"What do you want to eat? KFC or Pizza Hut?"
Yao Nian felt exasperated. "Uncle Shen, even though I call you 'uncle,' I'm not that young anymore. Aren't those choices a bit too childish?"
Shen Du chuckled softly. "Sorry, I thought kids liked those things."
Yao Nian turned to glance at him. He seemed to enjoy smiling; his Adam's apple moved slightly as he spoke, and the corners of his mouth maintained a gentle curve. However, Yao Nian was still somewhat displeased by his reference to her as a child.
During a brief pause at a traffic light, Yao Nian asked, "Aren't you from Huaibei?"
Shen Du raised an eyebrow. "How did you figure that out?"
Yao Nian replied coolly, "Your license plate."
"My hometown is in Shanghai. Coming to Huaibei is like a business trip for me," he said as he pressed down on the gas pedal when the light turned green. "You'll find out soon enough; this kind of business trip is just part of my routine."
Yao Nian turned to look at him. "Could it be that you graduated from Huada as well?"
A flicker of surprise crossed Shen Du's eyes as he suddenly realized he might have underestimated this young girl. "How did you guess that?"
"I'm not guessing," Yao Nian stated confidently as she began to analyze. "You just mentioned your hometown is Shanghai, and Huada's law program ranks first in Shanghai. Plus, my dad has plenty of local lawyers but chose to bring you all the way here, which indicates your expertise must be exceptional. It’s easy to connect the dots."
"You're quite sharp," Shen Du remarked with admiration. "You really have the makings of a lawyer."
Yao Nian smiled proudly at his compliment.
Shen Du did not place himself on a pedestal as she had experienced with her elders; instead, he communicated with her on equal terms, which made her feel respected.
"Uncle Shen," Yao Nian tilted her head and glanced at him. "I really can't imagine you being friends with someone like my dad."
Shen Du tried to defend Yao Zhandong. "You can see that Mr. Yao cares about you."
"He's only concerned when it's unnecessary and indifferent when it matters," she replied.
Shen Du lightly tapped the brake and met her gaze. "For example, some things are undeniably correct and reasonable, but if they are delivered in a preachy tone, it can alienate the listener."
"Exactly!" Yao Nian exclaimed, almost wanting to applaud him. "We can barely get through three sentences without ending up in an argument."
"When I was younger, I also resented the guidance from my elders. I believed they were wrong; every generation has different experiences, and their wisdom might not apply to me."
Shen Du focused intently on the road ahead, his voice calm and clear as it reached Yao Nian's ears. "If you can't change the situation, do your best to protect your emotions from being affected or drained."
Suddenly, she felt a gentle flutter somewhere within her body, followed by a sense of relaxation spreading throughout her being. The pent-up emotions that had previously weighed her down were significantly eased by his simple words.
