The deep-seated sorrow and resentment seemed impossible to dispel. It was a classic Cantonese old song. Yao Nian couldn't help but hum along softly to the rhythm: "Understanding love means losing everything, why do I still like you?" Her standard Cantonese pronunciation caught Shen Du off guard.
"I thought people your age wouldn't enjoy such old songs," he remarked.
Yao Nian leaned against the car window, watching the flow of traffic outside. "Old songs are worth listening to."
As the song came to an end, Yao Nian turned to look at him several times during the drive, hesitating as if she wanted to say something.
"What do you want to say?" Shen Du tilted his head slightly.
She paused, surprised that he was clearly focused on the road ahead. After a moment of hesitation, she mustered her courage and asked, "Uncle Shen, what do you think of Sister Zhou Yuan?"
"In what way are you referring to?" he replied.
Yao Nian furrowed her brow. "In every aspect. I feel like she seems to really like you."
Shen Du turned the steering wheel, raising an eyebrow slightly. "The little girl has quite a complex mind; she's just consulting me about some legal issues."
Yao Nian didn’t respond immediately, but then he added, "However, your little deskmate has been quite obvious."
"Zhou Shiyi?" Yao Nian immediately defended, "We have a pure and innocent classmate relationship!"
Hearing this, Shen Du chuckled lightly. "Having a relationship at your age isn't considered early romance anymore. Still, remember to protect yourself."
"I already said we're just classmates," Yao Nian's voice grew softer. "Besides, he's not my type."
The girl was sensitive and perceptive; Shen Du worried that she might feel awkward and decided not to delve further into the topic.
As they drove back to the Jiangling villa, Yao Nian unbuckled her seatbelt. "Thank you for taking me out for dinner tonight."
"I should be thanking you," Shen Du smiled. "I haven't had such authentic Su cuisine in a long time."
The girl jumped out of the car. "Goodbye, Uncle Shen."
Shen Du looked through the car window at the villa behind her, which was shrouded in darkness. He said seriously, "During my time in Huaibei, if you need any help, feel free to contact me."
The girl's eyes sparkled. "Really?"
Shen Du nodded. "I'll reach out in a couple of days; there are some formalities that require your signature."
Yao Nian let out a soft "oh," her brows lifting momentarily before drooping again.
Shen Du watched her walk into the house. When he saw the lights of the villa flicker on, he finally started the car and drove away.
As soon as she stepped inside, Xu Jiayi's call came through as expected.
"Yao Nian, you actually had dinner with Zhou Shiyi tonight?" Her tone was filled with teasing intrigue. "Sounds like something's going on!"
"What's going on?!" Yao Nian retorted angrily. "Are you from the CIA or something?"
Xu Jiayi's laughter echoed from the other end of the line. "Did you not see the group messages? This loudspeaker in our group is proclaiming that he had a lovely dinner with you."
Yao Nian flopped onto the sofa, raising her hand to her forehead. "Please, don't mention him. Where are you right now?"
"I just finished dinner with my parents and am trying to digest," Xu Jiayi replied. "Do you want to come out for a stroll?"
Feeling a wave of melancholy wash over her, Yao Nian realized she really needed to talk, but then she remembered Shen Du's words.
Suddenly, Yao Nian sat up straight on the sofa. "Why don’t you come over to my place?"
Xu Jiayi paused in surprise. "Did your dad leave again?"
"There's no one at home anyway. If it gets too late, you can just stay over," Yao Nian said.
After hanging up the phone, Yao Nian pulled out a business card from her jeans pocket that had Zhou Yuan's contact information and the address of a teahouse printed on it.
Indeed, while Shen Du had parked and taken that call just moments ago, she didn't know what had compelled her to take that card he had casually tucked beside the central console.
