As the door swung open, Shen Dumu looked up, surprised at how early it was. He wasn't dressed in formal attire today; his hair seemed a bit shorter than the last time she had seen him. Clad in a casual outfit of linen tones, he had his hands casually tucked into his pockets, adding an air of elegance to his demeanor.
Yao Nian, standing nearly 1.7 meters tall, had to slightly lift her chin to meet his gaze. "I just saw your car upstairs and almost thought I had overslept," she said.
Shen Dumu turned to open the car door and retrieved a paper bag from the passenger seat, handing it to her. "I arrived too early."
Yao Nian thanked him and opened the bag to find a warm blueberry cheesecake puff inside. "Let's eat in the car," Shen Dumu suggested with a smile. "I'm afraid there might be traffic later."
After quietly devouring the entire puff while seated in the passenger seat, Yao Nian suddenly realized that she had no idea where Shen Dumu was taking her. "Where are we going?" she asked, folding the paper bag neatly before turning to him.
Shen Dumu chuckled softly. "You finally remembered to ask me."
Yao Nian was taken aback. "What do you mean?"
"I was waiting for you to ask after we set the time yesterday. I didn’t expect you to be so unconcerned."
Her ears flushed with embarrassment. "I forgot."
Before long, as she caught sight of the words 'Housing Authority' ahead, a faint understanding began to dawn on her.
Shen Dumu parked the car and reached into the back seat for some documents. "The reason I brought you here today is to handle the transfer of ownership."
"Transfer what?" Yao Nian asked, her voice trembling without her realizing it.
"President Yao has decided not to pursue legal action and has agreed to negotiate a divorce with Ms. Qiao," Shen Dumu explained, observing her expression closely. "Ms. Qiao's condition for the divorce is that these two properties will be transferred into your name."
She took the documents from Shen Dumu's hand and began to read them, tears suddenly spilling from her left eye and trickling down to her chin.
In that moment, the reality of her parents' divorce became tangible. After the division of assets, they would never again share meals at the same table or travel together to see mountains and rivers; those familiar and cherished scenes would now only exist in memory.
The girl's eyes reddened, her expression one of quiet restraint and suppressed emotion.
Shen Du let out a gentle sigh and said softly, "It's okay, if you want to cry, just let it out."
"Who wants to cry?" Yao Nian replied, wiping away the tear that had trickled down her chin, taking a deep breath. They should have divorced a long time ago; she just couldn't understand why they had agreed to wait until after her college entrance exams, as if it were some sort of ritual.
Shen Du quietly watched her, not rushing to speak.
"Uncle Shen," Yao Nian sniffed.
"I'm just a bit sad. They are still so young; they might have new families and partners in the future. In the end, this home will be left with just me."
In a world where there was no longer a place to return to, she felt like a kite with its string cut, unable to find any spool to guide it.
Shen Du looked at her with soft eyes. "Do you want to hear my thoughts?"
Yao Nian lifted her gaze to meet his.
"Sometimes, divorce isn't necessarily a bad thing. Everyone has the right to live their life in a way they deem appropriate, including you. You can end any relationship that makes you uncomfortable at any time."
Seeing her stop crying, Shen Du continued, "You don't need to feel guilty or blame yourself for this. As the saying goes, regardless of how their relationship changes, your heart that loves them will never change."
"As for everything else, leave it to time to heal."
The confusion in Yao Nian's eyes gradually cleared.
