Yao Nian stood among the crowd, occasionally glancing at Shen Du. He showed no signs of impatience, exuding an air of calm and stability at all times. When he wasn't smiling, he gave off a cool distance that made him seem unapproachable. However, whenever Yao Nian looked his way, Shen Du would always return her gaze with a reassuring smile that made her want to steal another glance.
"Lawyer Shen?" A woman's voice broke through the noise, laced with surprise. "What are you doing here?"
Shen Du turned his head. The person before him didn't leave a strong impression; he vaguely remembered her as Zhou Yuan, Yao Nian's classmate's sister.
"You’re Zhou Yuan," she said, noticing the flowers in Shen Du's hand. "I was wondering why Yao Nian was alone. You must be here representing her parents, right?"
Shen Du nodded slightly. "Yao Nian's parents are quite busy. I happened to have some time, so I came."
"Tell me about it," Zhou Yuan sighed. "My parents are the same way. I've been the one taking care of everything for Shi Yi since he was little; they hardly pay attention."
Shen Du smiled faintly and remained silent.
"That Lawyer Shen," Zhou Yuan said as she pulled out her phone. Hesitating, she asked, "Could I add you on WeChat? I have a friend looking for a lawyer, and I could recommend you."
"What kind of case is it?" Shen Du inquired before adding, "Our firm mainly operates in Shanghai. If it's in Huaibei, I would suggest finding a local lawyer."
"Oh," Zhou Yuan suddenly seemed at a loss for words. "I’m not really sure about the specifics, but aren’t you here on business in Huaibei? Doesn’t that count as out-of-town work?"
Shen Du opened his QR code. "You can consult with our firm's lawyers first."
When Zhou Yuan saw that the WeChat name was Xincheng Law Firm, her heart sank; it was clearly not his personal account.
"Yao Nian! Yao Nian!" Zhou Shi Yi nudged her arm. "Let’s take another picture! I think I should take off my jacket to look cooler."
Since Zhou Yuan started talking to Shen Du, Yao Nian had been keeping an eye on them, missing Zhou Shi Yi calling her several times.
"Why don’t you take a picture with Jia Yi first?" Yao Nian said absently.
Zhou Shi Yi immediately made a face of disdain. "What would I take a picture with her for? It’s just wasting my phone storage."
"You think I want to take pictures with you?"
Nearby, Xu Jia Yi was busy taking selfies and shot back without hesitation, "With that security uniform of yours? I'd pay you to not take a picture with me!"
The two of them had started arguing again, and in the midst of their quarrel, Yao Nian quickly approached Shen Du and Zhou Yuan.
"Zhou Yuan Jie," she greeted, handing over her phone. "Could you please help me take a picture with Uncle Shen?"
Zhou Yuan was momentarily taken aback but quickly accepted the phone. "Of course I can."
Noticing Shen Du's slightly stunned expression, Yao Nian looked up at him. "Is that okay?"
The girl's eyes sparkled with an indescribable beauty. Shen Du smiled and placed the flowers into her arms, rising to his feet as a silent affirmation of her request.
In the frame, the man stood tall like a pine tree, his tea-colored eyes shimmering with a gentle mist of warmth and a soft smile.
Throughout the moment, the girl's gaze remained fixed on him, never wavering even as the shutter clicked.
Zhou Yuan felt a jolt in her heart, as if she had realized something significant. The intuition of a woman told her that Yao Nian's look at Shen Du was far from the simple admiration of a junior for an elder.
