When Yao Nian woke up, the surroundings were quiet, with only the sound of the IV drip ticking away.
She looked at the needle in her hand and took a few seconds to realize she was in a hospital. The pain in her stomach had already subsided. As she turned her head slightly, she caught sight of a man sitting on the sofa across from her.
He had his eyes closed, arms crossed over his chest, and his head tilted back slightly, making his Adam's apple stand out prominently. The soft moonlight streamed through the window, casting varying shades of shadow over him, creating a captivating silhouette in the darkness.
Yao Nian quietly watched him, her heart filled with mixed emotions as she sighed silently. Her troublesome stomach had caused him trouble once again.
Outside, it seemed the rain had stopped at some point. Yao Nian reached out to fumble for her phone on the bedside table, wanting to check the time. In the darkness, her elbow accidentally bumped against the small table next to the bed, producing a sound that was neither too loud nor too soft.
Shen Du's brow twitched as he suddenly opened his eyes.
Yao Nian froze.
He was awake?
He quickly got up and walked to the bedside, leaning over to check on her. "Does it still hurt?"
Yao Nian mechanically shook her head; it didn’t hurt anymore.
As she opened her mouth to speak, she realized her throat was hoarse, sounding like a squawking chicken.
Shen Du looked at the pale-faced girl and seemed to let out a sigh of relief.
"What am I going to do with you?"
Yao Nian clutched the blanket tightly, guilt evident in her voice. "Uncle Shen, have I troubled you too much?"
"Not really a trouble," he replied, though he was clearly startled by her condition. "But your abdominal scan showed that your stomach wall is thin; you were on the verge of a perforated ulcer. The doctor said if it had gotten any worse, you would have needed surgery."
When he wasn’t smiling, Shen Du appeared somewhat serious. Yao Nian knew she was in the wrong and silently lowered her head without saying anything.
His tone was somewhat helpless as he continued, "You can't just treat your stomach; you need to take care of it properly. You have to eat well."
"I know," Yao Nian said before sneezing suddenly.
The warmth of his hand covered her for just a moment before it was withdrawn. Shen Du tucked the blanket around her more snugly, murmuring, "Fortunately, you don't have a fever."
"You should sleep a bit longer. There are still tests to check in the morning."
"What time is it?" She had completely lost track of time, only aware that the night outside was deepening.
Shen Du raised his hand to glance at his watch. "It's past three."
Yao Nian was momentarily startled. Had he really been here with her for so long? She felt guilty for taking up so much of his time. The thought of making him stay here to keep watch weighed heavily on her conscience.
"Uncle Shen, my stomach doesn't hurt anymore. You should go back and rest," she suggested.
"What kind of talk is that?" Shen Du settled back onto the sofa.
His voice was particularly clear in the stillness of the night. "If you want, you can think of me as your friend. That might help lighten your burden a little."
The moonlight was hazy, and Yao Nian could hear Shen Du's steady breathing. After confirming that he had fallen asleep, she quietly slipped out of bed and tiptoed to the door, asking the nurse for an extra blanket.
He remained in the same position, arms crossed over his chest, eyes closed, with a faint crease between his brows. Yao Nian tiptoed carefully and gently draped the blanket over him.
