After Shen Du hung up the phone, he wore a contemplative expression, as if lost in thought.
"Could you send me that photo we took yesterday?" he asked.
Yao Nian's eyes flickered, her hand holding the phone feeling slightly numb. "What photo? Have you forgotten so soon?"
Shen Du raised an eyebrow. "The one of us at your graduation party."
Yao Nian struggled to find the right words for a while before finally muttering, "I accidentally deleted that photo."
Her lie was too clumsy. Although Shen Du didn't know why, he chose not to confront her and simply replied, "That's quite a pity."
The hospital had designated visiting hours, and Shen Du left just a minute before they ended. Before he left, he specifically reminded Aunt Xue not to sleep too soundly that night and to pay attention to Yao Nian's movements.
Before going to bed, Aunt Xue carefully wiped Yao Nian down from head to toe.
"Little Nian," Aunt Xue sighed as she rubbed her back, "you really are too thin. No wonder you have stomach issues. Nowadays, young girls are so obsessed with losing weight that they hardly eat. Don't follow their example."
Aunt Xue seemed worried that Yao Nian's frail body couldn't handle it; her touch was gentle and soothing. Yao Nian lay on the bed with drooping eyelids, feeling drowsy.
"I'm not on a diet," Yao Nian yawned. "I just don't have an appetite. But I will eat more in the future."
"Then," Aunt Xue wrung out a towel, and the warm sensation returned to Yao Nian's back. "By the way, is Mr. Shen a relative of yours? He seems quite concerned about you."
At this, Yao Nian's sleepiness vanished, and she turned to ask, "How is he concerned?"
"Oh dear, I haven't finished yet!" Aunt Xue pressed her back down onto the bed again.
"I'm not bragging; I've been working in this hospital for three years now, and my reputation at the nurses' station is impeccable. Mr. Shen must have inquired about me because when he came looking for me, he had already booked me for another patient undergoing an appendectomy. He insisted on paying me double just to take care of you. Wouldn't you say that's concern?"
Yao Nian fell silent, adding another layer to her debt of gratitude toward Shen Du.
As she held the new pajamas Shen Du had bought for her—planning to ask Aunt Xue to wash them—she noticed that the tag had already been removed. Bringing them close to her nose, she could smell the scent of laundry detergent.
Shen Du's thoughtfulness exceeded her expectations.
Yet Yao Nian understood that his tenderness and meticulousness were not directed solely at her; it was simply part of his refined nature. He would likely treat anyone lying here with the same care.
Thinking about this made Yao Nian's mood inevitably sink again. The bittersweet feeling within her was like a fragile spark—faint and fleeting—only enough to feed her momentary fluttering heart.
In the following days, Shen Du spent most of his time at the hospital, personally supervising Yan Nian to ensure she finished the dinner he brought her before he would leave. Yan Nian felt that she had consumed more porridge in these few days than in her entire life. However, she found joy in it.
After her check-up that day, her various indicators finally met the discharge criteria. Shen Du arrived early the next morning to help her with the discharge procedures. On the day of Yan Nian's impending discharge, Yan Zhandong, who had not been seen for a while, finally made his way to the ward.
When Yan Zhandong entered the room, Yan Nian almost didn't recognize him. He was always very particular about his appearance; he wouldn’t leave the house without styling his hair, wouldn’t go out without shaving his beard, and regardless of the season, he changed into a fresh outfit every day.
