The air conditioning in the lobby was set low, causing Yao Nian to instinctively rub her arms. Her delicate fingers gripped the handle of her milk cup as her gaze occasionally drifted toward the elevator, watching the comings and goings of people.
"You're such a chatterbox," Shen Du said, tilting his neck as he held his phone, zipping up his travel bag. "I'm checking out now."
"Hey, wait a minute," Ji Zheyuan shouted from the other end of the line. "Don't head home just yet. Come straight to the law firm; I have a few documents for you to review first."
Shen Du sighed, "You really do care about me, huh?"
"What does it matter? You're all alone anyway. I'm going to watch a movie with Linlin tonight; just help me out, okay?"
After hanging up, Shen Du checked the time and pulled out the room card from the wall, picking up his travel bag as he left the room.
Upon reaching the lobby, he handed the room card to the receptionist and took a moment to reply to a few messages.
The receptionist looked at her computer and asked, "Are you Mr. Shen Du?"
Shen Du looked up, "Yes?"
The receptionist pointed behind him, "A girl was just waiting for you. She’s been sitting there for quite a while."
Following her gesture, Shen Du turned around and quickly spotted a girl sitting in the café not far away.
The young girl sat upright with her legs crossed and her toes slightly raised. From this angle, she looked thin as a piece of paper.
Her hands supported her chin as she stared blankly into her cup of milk, clearly lost in thought.
Shen Du paused for a moment before striding toward her. "Yao Nian?"
Hearing that familiar voice, Yao Nian suddenly lifted her head, her shoulders visibly straightening for an instant.
Perhaps because he was driving later, Shen Du was dressed casually in simple black and white pants, holding a brown travel bag. He appeared relaxed.
"Oh," she opened her mouth slightly. "I didn’t see you come out of the elevator."
"I didn’t take the elevator," Shen Du smiled and pointed toward the door behind her. "I came out through the side stairs."
"Oh, that makes sense." Yao Nian pouted slightly.
Shen Du sat down across from her, his eyes filled with surprise. "I don’t remember telling you I was staying here."
Yao Nian replied, "You left the name of this hotel on the bag when you returned my clothes."
Shen Du instinctively chuckled; this girl had quite a sense of responsibility to come all this way just to return it to him.
She nodded slightly, discreetly shifting the small white backpack resting on her lap closer to her chest, where a black velvet gift box lay quietly inside.
"Uncle Shen," Yao Nian straightened her posture, sitting up as properly as a student speaking in class. "Thank you for taking care of me in the hospital during this time. I hope everything goes smoothly for you in the future."
Just as she finished speaking, she noticed Shen Du pressing his lips together, trying to suppress the laughter that was about to spill from his eyes.
Yao Nian instantly fell silent, feeling as if she might shatter into pieces. What was she even saying? As a literature student, why was she rambling on like this?
He held back a chuckle and said, "Well, at least you didn’t wish me wealth as vast as the Eastern Sea or longevity like the Southern Mountain."
Yao Nian took a sip of milk, steadying her expression that was on the verge of breaking down. "What I meant was that there might not be many opportunities to meet in the future, so I wanted to formally say thank you to you in person."
"I remember Hua University is in Shanghai," he replied.
Yao Nian responded with a soft "mm," her heart skipping a beat.
Then she heard Shen Du say, "When school starts, remember to let me know. Uncle will treat you to a welcome meal."
A smile gradually spread across the corners of her eyes and brows, her tone lifting with excitement. "Really?"
Shen Du's dark eyes fixed on her for two seconds before he suddenly stood up and walked towards her.
Yao Nian froze for a moment, her breath noticeably quickening as Shen Du leaned slightly closer. She could clearly feel his presence drawing nearer.
What should she do? What should she do?
She tried to calm the fluttering in her chest, but her heart raced like a drumbeat, growing faster and faster.
