It seems there’s more to it than just a little.
To be honest, Xu Jiayi took a sip of her coffee and asked, "Have you ever thought about proposing?"
"Proposing?" Yao Nian was taken aback.
"Yeah, since he’s already interested, and who knows if you’ll even get to see each other again in the future? Why not just go for it?"
Yao Nian had never considered this question. She didn’t feel any pressing need regarding Shen Du.
"What if he rejects me?"
"If he rejects you, then just let it go. It’s better than being miserable every day."
Seeing that Yao Nian remained silent, Xu Jiayi leaned closer. "Are you afraid that if he rejects you, you won’t even be able to be friends anymore?"
Yao Nian hesitated for a moment. "He seems like someone with principles. If he really just sees me as a junior, wouldn’t it be strange if I suddenly proposed?"
"It is a bit strange," Xu Jiayi nodded. "But if you’re waiting for him to make the first move, I advise you to give up on that idea."
"Why?" Yao Nian shot her a sideways glance.
"From what I’ve seen during our few encounters, he’s a rational person who maintains distance. He’s not someone you can easily entice with charm."
"Who said anything about charm?" Yao Nian felt flustered. In truth, she hadn’t thought that much about it; she simply felt comfortable being around him.
"Have you ever heard the saying that when you find chatting with someone easy, that person likely has higher emotional intelligence and awareness than you? It’s called downward compatibility."
Xu Jiayi hit the nail on the head. "I’m not trying to dampen your spirits, but while you might be one of the people he can connect with, you’re definitely not the only one."
That stung.
Yao Nian thought Xu Jiayi was too talented for her major in visual design; she should have studied psychology instead.
"Have you really considered switching majors?"
"Switch majors? No way," Xu Jiayi continued. "The three great ends of a man’s life are drinking tea, playing cards, and fishing. I genuinely worry about your future life."
Yao Nian couldn’t take it anymore. "He’s a man! Not an old man!"
Xu Jiayi wasn’t wrong, but she overlooked one thing.
Gentleness is also willing to be downwardly compatible.
Yao Nian had encountered many so-called talented and capable individuals with impressive resumes, but they all shared a common flaw: they loved to preach, lacked boundaries, and were obsessed with weighing pros and cons. Their sense of superiority far exceeded their actual excellence.
Few possess a brightness that is both radiant and gentle, confidence that is tempered with restraint. No one can refuse such a tender person.
Thanks to Tuo Jizhe, Shen Du arrived home just past one in the morning. The house, uninhabited for half a month, was covered in a light layer of dust. As he entered the bedroom and turned on the light, Shen Du sighed; the sheets and pillowcases all needed to be changed.
Cleaning in the middle of the night was hardly a pleasant task. After changing his clothes and washing his hands, he turned on the vacuum cleaner and then headed to the balcony, intending to toss his clothes into the washing machine first.
As he unzipped his bag, a black rectangular gift box tied with a bow slipped out. Shen Du was momentarily taken aback, confirming that this was not his belonging. He picked up the gift box, untied the bow, and opened it to find a beautifully crafted black fountain pen resting on plush velvet.
The pen's surface was smooth and adorned with a circle of platinum-encrusted diamonds. The nib, made from high-hardness alloy, was intricately engraved with floral designs from India, giving it a substantial feel in his hand.
Shen Du quickly recalled how Yao Nian had been sneaking around on the ground at noon. He frowned; the little girl had even tricked him into thinking she was tying her shoelaces.
He picked up his phone, ready to question her thoroughly, but suddenly realized it was the middle of the night. Never mind; he would settle accounts with her tomorrow.
