The journey from Huaibei to Shanghai wasn't particularly long, but it still took nearly an hour. Throughout the ride, Yao Nian leaned back in her seat, feeling drowsy, until they reached the toll booth that Shen Du had sent her. She straightened up.
As she gazed out at the flowing traffic outside the window, Yao Nian's awareness began to sharpen; this was a city where he was present. The entrance of Huada was crowded with new students and their parents, making it impossible for cars to pass. The school didn't allow private vehicles inside, so Yao Zhandong and Yao Nian got out first while Uncle Cheng went off to find a parking spot.
As expected of a top university, the environment was impressive. Yao Zhandong sighed as they walked, "Look at all this greenery; it’s clear that it was designed by professionals."
Yao Nian knew he was slipping into his professional habit again.
The pathways were packed with incoming students, and volunteers in red vests were guiding newcomers. Temporary canopies lined the green paths, adorned with welcome posters, each marked with information about different colleges.
Yao Nian focused on the orientation booklet in her hands when suddenly a shadow fell in front of her, accompanied by a clear and bright male voice.
"Hello! Need any help?"
She looked up to see a tall young man wearing a light-colored shirt paired with loose black pants. He smiled, revealing neat white teeth and exuding a natural charm.
He seemed to have run over; his breath was slightly hurried, and his chest rose and fell gently.
"Hi," Yao Nian nodded and asked while holding her booklet, "Do you know how to get to the Law School?"
"What a coincidence! I’m from the Law School!"
His eyes lit up. "You haven’t registered yet, have you? I can take you there now; it’ll be crowded later."
"No need to trouble yourself; just tell me how to get there."
Before Yao Nian could finish her sentence, he eagerly picked up the suitcase by her side and began introducing himself enthusiastically. "I’m Yu Yi—like the character for 'radiant'—what’s your name?"
Yao Nian felt a bit taken aback by his familiarity. "I’m Yao Nian."
At that moment, Yao Zhandong finally caught up after examining the greenery nearby. "Who’s this from your school?"
Seeing their similar features, Yu Yi quickly reintroduced himself. "Hello, sir! I’m a volunteer responsible for welcoming new students at our Law School."
Yao Zhandong sized him up briefly. "Are you also studying law? So you’ll be classmates with Xiao Nian then."
Yu Yi smiled. "To be precise, I should be called 'senior.' I’m one year ahead of Yao Xue."
Under Yu Yi's guidance, Yao Nian's enrollment process went smoothly. After verifying her information and paying the fees, she ended up with a handful of cards: student ID, campus card, and various promotional materials from the Law School.
Yao Zhandong couldn’t help much; he stood alone in the shade smoking a cigarette until a passing student reminded him that smoking was prohibited on campus.
Watching him awkwardly extinguish the cigarette butt, Yao Nian couldn't help but feel a bit amused.
Yu Yi handed her the receipt and insurance policy he had prepared, then took out his phone. A little embarrassed, he scratched his head and said, "Junior, let's add each other on WeChat. Since you're new here, feel free to reach out if you need any help."
Considering they were from the same college, Yao Nian agreed and added him on WeChat.
The girls' dormitory usually didn't allow outsiders in, but today was an exception. When Yao Zhandong helped Yao Nian carry her suitcase up to the sixth floor, he kept complaining, "Your school really isn't great; such a high building and no elevator?"
"That just shows you don't exercise at all," Yao Nian shot back. "You’re out of breath after just a few steps."
Although there was no elevator, the dormitory conditions were quite nice—four-person rooms with a lofted bed and desk setup. By the time they entered the dormitory, two other girls had already arrived before her.
