Yao Nian was distractedly reading a case analysis question when she absentmindedly asked, "What lecture?"
"It seems to be on legal ethics. The instructor just posted about it in the group, saying we need to sign up," Lin Mo replied.
Yao Nian put down her book. "Well, I have nothing else to do this afternoon anyway."
Lin Mo tapped a few buttons on her phone. "I've signed you up."
For a university specializing in political and legal studies, hosting lectures was nothing new. However, since both Yao Nian and Lin Mo had enrolled in the course on Legal Professional Ethics, they wouldn't miss this opportunity.
On the way to the auditorium, with plenty of time before the lecture began, Yao Nian and Lin Mo strolled leisurely along the cross-shaped path after leaving the cafeteria.
Next to them was the artificial lake of Huada University. The weather was pleasant, and many students were lingering here, taking walks and digesting their meals.
"I've been meaning to ask you," Lin Mo glanced at Yao Nian. "You didn't come back the night before school started. Did something happen?"
Yao Nian paused for a moment, smiling slightly. "You must have been holding that question in for a while; only now are you asking me."
"It's not that," Lin Mo replied. "I just felt like your mood has been off since that day you came back. I wanted to ask you sooner."
Yao Nian rubbed her face. "Was it that obvious?"
Lin Mo stared at her. "Clearly! You often zone out during class."
But Yao Nian thought she had been trying hard to appear normal.
"I'm not trying to pry into your personal life," Lin Mo said. "I just think that sometimes sharing your feelings can be a relief. But if you don't want to talk about it, that's fine too."
Her words reminded Yao Nian of Xu Jiayi. During the National Day holiday, Xu Jiayi had flown to Yun City for her cousin's wedding, so they hadn't met as planned.
Yao Nian didn't want to burden others with her negative emotions.
"It's nothing I can't share," she said lightly, trying to sound casual. "I just have a crush on someone I can never be with."
Lin Mo paused for half a second. "Ah, the classic pain of youthful literature."
Yao Nian laughed at her comment. "Isn't that a bit melodramatic?"
"Not necessarily," Lin Mo replied, somewhat surprised. "I'm just curious—who is this person with such poor taste?"
Yao Nian lowered her gaze. "Maybe it's because my taste is too good."
In those brief days they spent together, it was the most genuine warmth she had ever felt.
When they arrived at the auditorium, nearly all the seats in the back rows were filled, leaving only a few scattered spots in the front rows.
What’s going on? Lin Mo was shocked. Who on earth was giving a lecture? There were so many people even on the weekend.
Yao Nian was also surprised; it was just an ordinary ethics lecture, yet the attendance rate reached a staggering ninety percent.
After they signed in, they had to ask a classmate nearby to help them find two adjacent empty seats.
The director walked onto the stage with a microphone, and the auditorium quickly quieted down.
He tapped the microphone and said, “Students, today our college has invited an outstanding alumnus of our school, a partner at Xincheng Law Firm, and also your senior, Lawyer Shen Du, to explain the moral qualities and standards that legal professionals should possess.”
Yao Nian didn’t hear a single word of the lengthy introduction that followed. The moment she heard the name Shen Du, her mind went completely blank, and she froze in place.
