Shen Du withdrew his gaze, noticing Jiang Lanyue staring at him with a smile that was neither here nor there.
"What’s up?"
"You look like you’re raising a child," she replied.
Shen Du stood up and offered her his seat, moving to the side to pour himself a glass of water. "You go ahead and take a look. If everything is fine, I’ll send it over."
"Sure," Jiang Lanyue said, picking up a pen and swiftly signing her name at the bottom of the document. "Do you think I wouldn’t trust you to get things done?"
"What time is the flight this afternoon?" Shen Du asked.
Jiang Lanyue raised an eyebrow. "What’s wrong? Can’t bear to see me go?"
Shen Du chuckled lightly. "Just ask them to check on me when you get there."
Yao Nian splashed her face with water at the sink, droplets splattering everywhere, even dampening her hair at the temples. She needed to wake herself up a bit.
As she lifted her head, a face suddenly appeared in the mirror.
Yao Nian jumped in surprise and turned around slowly, water trickling down her neck and soaking her collar.
Jiang Lanyue stood behind her, holding a bag and a small carry-on suitcase.
"Quick, wipe your face," Jiang Lanyue said, pulling out two tissues from her bag. "I’m leaving now, just wanted to say goodbye."
"Thank you," Yao Nian replied, taking the tissues in a daze. Her expression shifted to confusion. "Leaving? Where are you going?"
"Back to Houston."
"America?" Yao Nian blurted out. "What about Uncle Shen?"
Jiang Lanyue paused for a moment, puzzled. "What do you mean 'what about him'?"
Yao Nian struggled to find the right words, but they just wouldn’t come out.
After staring at her for a while, Jiang Lanyue suddenly realized something. "You don’t think Shen Du is my boyfriend, do you?"
As soon as she said it, she burst into laughter, her shoulders shaking with mirth.
Finally, Jiang Lanyue understood where this inexplicable hostility from the young girl was coming from.
"Isn’t he?" Yao Nian asked, feeling her throat tighten as she spoke.
Jiang Lanyue looked at her with a playful smile. "Little girl, do you like him?"
Her face instantly flushed, and she stared wide-eyed, unable to speak.
Shen Du is really shameless, Jiang Lanyue thought to herself. At his age, he's still chasing after young girls.
"No, no," Yao Nian lowered her voice unconsciously. "He doesn't know yet."
Jiang Lanyue raised an eyebrow. "Why do you think Shen Du and I are a couple?"
After a brief pause, she answered honestly, "I saw you two the other day at the law firm."
"Is that so?" Just as the words left her mouth, the woman leaned down, her body enveloped in the scent of rose perfume, brushing against Yao Nian's ear.
"Do you know what a cheek-kiss is?"
Yao Nian's heart skipped a beat.
"I met Shen Du when he was visiting the United States. He's a good friend of mine, and I trust him a lot. I came back specifically to ask him to help me with a lawsuit."
Then she smiled slightly. "And by the way, I don't like men."
Yao Nian's expression turned to one of disbelief.
The implications of those words were overwhelming; she couldn't even find an appropriate response.
So all the emotional turmoil and inner conflict over the past few days was just for a cheek-kiss?
"Ah," Jiang Lanyue put on her sunglasses and patted Yao Nian on the shoulder. "My car is waiting downstairs."
"Sister Lanyue!" Yao Nian hurriedly took two steps forward to stop her. "Can you… not tell him yet?"
"Hmm?" Jiang Lanyue turned back to look at her. "You don't want him to know?"
Yao Nian took a deep breath. "I want to tell him myself."
