The sudden twist of events caught Yao Nian completely off guard. She struggled to calm herself, but a small thrill continued to bubble up from within.
With a head full of chaotic thoughts, she slowly walked back to Shen Du's office. Just as she stepped through the door, a wall of people appeared in front of her. Realizing she was about to collide with him, Yao Nian had no time to retract her foot and instinctively leaned back.
Shen Du reached out and caught her arm. "What are you thinking? Not even watching where you're going?"
"Oh, nothing." Yao Nian composed herself and distanced herself from him, taking the lead into the office.
Shen Du handed her a stack of bound documents from his desk. "I found some representative cases that the firm has handled over the past two years. You can take a look."
"So many?" Yao Nian accepted the thick volumes, which had timelines and case types carefully annotated on the title pages.
She flipped through a couple of pages. "Will this involve anyone's privacy?"
"I remember saying you would make a great lawyer," Shen Du replied with a smile. "No, they all use pseudonyms."
The office door was ajar when Ji Zhe Yuan poked his head in sneakily. "Busy?"
"Speak," Shen Du replied tersely.
"Xiao Lin is back; let’s have dinner together tonight."
Ji Zhe Yuan turned to Yao Nian. "You should come too; it’s so pitiful eating in the cafeteria every day. Let your brother take you out for something nice."
Yao Nian glanced at Shen Du, her eyes seeking his approval.
"What are you looking at him for?" Ji Zhe Yuan said irritably. "I’m treating!"
Shen Du chuckled in response, "Let’s go together."
There was still plenty of time before dinner, and Shen Du's phone rang one after another, indicating he was quite busy.
Yao Nian felt it best not to disturb him and settled into a corner of the sofa, picking up one of the documents to flip through it.
Almost every case had Shen Du's handwritten notes beside it, his strong and elegant handwriting reflecting his personality—calm and graceful.
Just as Shen Du finished replying to an email, he took a sip of water and glanced over at the sofa.
The young woman sat quietly there, her fingers gently turning the pages with focused intent. Unlike her usual high ponytail, her long hair cascaded freely over her shoulders. A slight blush tinted her skin as the evening sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a soft golden glow around her silhouette—a rare splash of brightness in his office.
The visual effect was inexplicably soothing. For a brief moment, Shen Du was lost in thought, but he quickly shook his head, feeling somewhat bewildered.
Time seemed to stretch on as Yao Nian remained frozen in her pose like a statue, completely unaware that Shen Du had walked past her. The expression on the young girl's face was unusually serious, her brows furrowed tightly.
"What case should I look at? It's so captivating!" Yao Nian exclaimed, raising her head in confusion. She then pointed at the book and said indignantly, "This man has wealth, fame, and social status—why would he engage in such heinous acts?"
The case left a deep impression on Shen Du: a well-respected professor from a prestigious university had been accused of luring and assaulting multiple children, regardless of gender. The youngest victim was only a few years old. One of the victims developed severe depression accompanied by dissociative symptoms and ultimately committed suicide by wrist-cutting. This shocking incident only came to light after it was made public.
Shen Du fell silent for a moment before speaking. "Politicians, celebrities, and the powerful often live within an abnormal desire system. Their psychological and physiological thresholds for satisfaction are far beyond those of ordinary people, especially when it comes to..."
He noticed the young girl looking at him with utmost seriousness. Feeling a bit awkward, he cleared his throat and continued, "Especially in terms of sexual matters."
Yao Nian's eyes widened slightly.
"To put it bluntly, normal relationships between men and women likely can't even touch their thresholds anymore; they require extreme stimulation to feel satisfied."
The girl’s expression grew grave as she sighed deeply. "Demons among us."
Shen Du recalled his own youth at Yao Nian's age—no, he should have been a bit older than she was now—entering this field with an innocent heart and passionate zeal.
