Yao Nian quickly sensed that something was off.
They usually locked the door when entering or leaving the dormitory, and they weren't familiar with the people in the neighboring dorm, so it was unusual for anyone to come in uninvited.
"Let's wait for Ru Fen to come," Yao Nian suggested. "Maybe she lost something."
Lin Mo thought for a moment and asked, "What time did you leave after Yao Nian and I went out for lunch?"
"I left right after," Cheng Xu replied. "He was already waiting for me downstairs and kept urging me to hurry."
"And what about Li Ru Fen?" Lin Mo asked again.
Fang Yi Ran said, "She was still there when I left. I even asked her why she didn't go out in the afternoon."
Since the semester started, Li Ru Fen had been coming and going at odd hours every weekend, rarely staying in the dorm. She never mentioned what she was up to, but Yao Nian had a hunch that she might be working a part-time job. After all, she had seen the stack of promotional flyers for a nearby grilled fish restaurant that Li Ru Fen brought back.
It wasn't unusual for college students to take on part-time work, and since Li Ru Fen never brought it up, Yao Nian didn't pry further.
Lin Mo scoffed, "So she was the only one in the dorm this afternoon?"
Yao Nian frowned. "Let's not jump to conclusions. The dorm supervisor isn't very strict on weekends; outsiders might have been able to get in."
"Who would dare steal from here? Who would run into the Law School to steal something?"
Just as she finished speaking, the lock on the dorm door turned, and Li Ru Fen walked in, carrying some books.
She typically had a neutral expression and often seemed like a ghost when she entered the dorm, occasionally putting on a displeased face.
Yao Nian didn't want to suspect her but couldn't help but notice a subtle change in her demeanor. The moment Li Ru Fen entered and saw the three of them, she instinctively avoided their gaze, appearing somewhat lacking in confidence.
Lin Mo couldn't hold back any longer and looked at Li Ru Fen. "Hey, did you lose anything?"
Li Ru Fen set down her books and glanced at them. "Lose something? What are you talking about?"
"My camera is missing," Yao Nian said. "And Yi Ran's headphones are gone too."
"What about you?" Li Ru Fen looked at Lin Mo.
"What about me?" Lin Mo frowned.
"You didn't lose anything?"
"I didn't take it."
"Isn't that obvious?" Li Rufen scoffed.
Lin Mo's eyes widened in disbelief as she looked at her. "Are you implying that I stole their things?"
As the tension between the two escalated, Yao Nian stepped in to mediate. "Lin Mo didn't mean anything by it. Why don't you check if anything is missing? If something is really gone, we can assess its value together and report it to the police."
"Assess its value? What a joke!" Lin Mo's anger flared, and she cursed loudly. "We're all law students here, and just for one camera, you could get three years!"
A flicker of panic crossed Li Rufen's eyes.
Fang Yiran timidly spoke up, "Um, my headphones weren't cheap either. I begged my dad for a long time before he bought them for me."
Lin Mo facepalmed.
"Is being rich that impressive?" Li Rufen suddenly retorted.
She stood up and slammed the stack of books on the table. "So what if you have money? Why do you suspect that I stole it?"
Yao Nian frowned. "I'm not accusing you; what I meant was—"
"Right! Just because my family isn't as well-off as yours! I can't even afford the same clothes or food! So when something goes missing, you all suspect me?"
Lin Mo pulled out a chair and pointed at her. "Who the hell is accusing you? We're just asking if you've lost anything! Why are you being so sensitive?"
