About half an hour later, Lin Mo noticed that the swelling on Yao Nian's foot had not subsided at all. She thought it was necessary to go to the hospital. The school doctor had said that Yao Nian couldn't put any weight on her foot until it was confirmed whether there was a fracture.
Setting aside the question of whether she and Fang Yiran could even carry Yao Nian to the hospital, getting her to the school gate was already a challenge. Lin Mo's eyes darted around before she said to Yao Nian, "Can I borrow your phone to make a call? Mine is almost out of battery."
Yao Nian didn't think much of it and unlocked her phone, handing it over. Lin Mo stepped out of the infirmary, glanced back at the girl lying on the bed, and quickly scrolled through her contacts until she found the number she needed.
Sitting by the bed, Fang Yiran rubbed her eyes and let out a big yawn. Seeing how tired she looked yet still insisting on staying with her, Yao Nian felt a pang of guilt. "I think it's not that painful anymore. Why don't we head back to the dormitory first?"
"Just a little longer," Lin Mo said, her expression somewhat unnatural. "Your foot is still swollen; why are you in such a hurry to leave?"
"Really, I'm fine! You guys don’t need to worry so much." Yao Nian lifted one leg and hopped off the bed, giving Fang Yiran a light pat on the arm. "Yiran, let's go."
"Huh?" Fang Yiran blinked in confusion. "Aren't you going to the hospital?"
"We can talk about it tomorrow," Yao Nian replied.
In the dim light under the trees, a man walked briskly, his trench coat flapping in the wind, revealing two bulging pockets at his waist. Lin Mo, who was looking around near the infirmary door, waved at him urgently. "Lawyer Shen! Over here!"
Yao Nian froze for a moment and instinctively looked up. Shen Du was wearing a long khaki trench coat with the collar half-open, showcasing his straight shoulders. He held his phone to his ear while scanning the area with his eyes.
Their gazes met in mid-air.
He lowered his phone and quickly jogged over to them. Shen Du was slightly out of breath as he looked up and down at the girl being supported by Lin Mo. "Where did you fall?"
Yao Nian was shocked. "W-What are you doing here?"
She silently turned to Lin Mo, her eyes slowly forming a question mark.
Lin Mo winked at her and explained, "Yao Nian twisted her ankle. It’s late at night and we don’t have any transportation, so we were hoping you could take her to the hospital."
"Let me take a look." Shen Du bent slightly at the waist.
Yao Nian braced herself against the ground, trying to hide her swollen foot that looked like a pig's trotter. It was nothing serious, just a sprain.
"Who says it's nothing?" Lin Mo immediately chimed in. "The school doctor said it might be a fracture."
Shen Du frowned slightly. "Let's get you checked at the hospital first."
"Really, it's not—"
He squatted down in front of Yao Nian, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Get on. My car is parked at the school gate."
Seeing her still frozen in place, Lin Mo shot her an urging glance.
As soon as she placed her hand on his shoulder, Shen Du quickly hooked his arm around her legs and lifted her up, adjusting her position effortlessly.
He turned to the two girls and nodded. "Thanks for your help tonight. I'm taking Yao Nian to the hospital."
"No trouble at all! You two hurry," they replied.
Fang Yiran, still in a daze, followed them closely. Lin Mo grabbed her hand. "What are you doing?"
"Aren't we going to the hospital with Yao Nian?" Fang Yiran asked.
Lin Mo rolled her eyes. "Isn't there already someone going with her?"
On the way back to the dormitory, Fang Yiran suddenly came to her senses and turned to Lin Mo. "Were you just trying to keep me from being a third wheel?"
Lin Mo shot her a look. "Don't tell me you've been silent this whole time just to think about that."
