She scoffed and explained, a hint of guilt in her voice, "I'm just saying, Qi, look at Brother Zheyuan, he's about to get married. You're at that age too, after all."
Shen Du interrupted her. "Why bring up age?"
Yao Nian immediately fell silent. She wasn't sure if it was the warmth from the car's heater, but she felt inexplicably hot.
On the way to pick up Ji Zheyuan and Song Xiaolin, Shen Du suddenly remembered something. "By the way, did you tell President Yao about the camping trip?"
"I'm not a child anymore; I don't need to report every little thing to him."
As they approached a red light at an intersection, Shen Du pressed the brake. "You should at least mention it; after all, we’ll be staying overnight."
"I called him this morning, but he didn't answer," Yao Nian replied dismissively. "What’s there to worry about when I’m with you?"
Shen Du pondered for a moment but still felt uneasy. He pulled over to the side of the road and called Yao Zhantong.
Hearing the busy signal on the other end, Yao Nian shrugged in expectation. "See? He's busy right now; he doesn’t have time for me."
After thinking for a moment, Shen Du decided to send Yao Zhantong a message instead.
During the holiday season, traffic in Shanghai was notoriously congested. After picking up Ji Zheyuan and Song Xiaolin, they finally found some relief once they left the city limits.
Yao Nian usually didn’t get car sick, but as they drove up the mountain, it felt like they were constantly turning left and right. She felt a heaviness in her chest and could sense the pressure building in her stomach, making her eyes fixate on the road ahead without daring to look away.
Noticing her expression, Shen Du slowed down. "Are you feeling carsick?"
From the backseat, Song Xiaolin handed her a bottle of water. "Drink some water first; this winding mountain road is quite tricky. Do you want to take a break?"
Yao Nian didn’t want to seem overly dramatic and shook her head despite the turmoil in her stomach.
After that, Shen Du would slow down before each turn to avoid sharp corners as much as possible. However, this meant they arrived at the campsite nearly an hour later than expected.
The camping site had a designated parking area that was almost full. He drove around for nearly two laps before finally finding a spot.
Song Xiaolin was the first to get out of the car. "Wow, the air up here is just so refreshing!"
Ji Zheyuan let out a sigh, tugging at the collar of his leather jacket and shrinking his neck. "Damn, it's so cold."
"Did I tell you to wear more?" Song Xiaolin shot him a glance. "Serves you right."
They still had a short stretch of mountain path to climb to reach the summit. Following the campsite's signposts, they walked along a narrow trail hidden beneath lush grass.
The forest was tranquil, surrounded by trees, with the ground covered in mottled lichen and moss. Yao Nian glanced at Shen Du, who was carrying two large bags, and instantly felt a pang of regret. If she had known they would be climbing, she wouldn't have bought so much.
The rocky path was narrow, and suddenly she felt her backpack lighten as the strap slipped down her shoulder. Turning around, she saw her backpack had already been taken by Shen Du.
"Why is it so heavy?" he asked, lifting it to weigh it in his hands.
"I brought my camera," Yao Nian replied, wanting to take the bag back. "You’re already carrying so much; I can handle this myself."
Shen Du casually slung the backpack over his shoulder, signaling for her to keep moving ahead.
Upon reaching the summit, Yao Nian was greeted by a breathtaking view. Before her lay a vast expanse of flat grassland, like a giant green carpet unfurling in front of her.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, inhaling the damp air mixed with the scent of unknown wildflowers and moist earth.
They hadn’t arrived too early; several tents of various sizes were already set up on the lawn, and a few camping vehicles were parked nearby.
Ji Zheyuan had already reserved a spot, choosing an area that would catch the sun. He collected tents, a barbecue grill, and a pile of ingredients from the owner.
They quickly divided their tasks: Shen Du rolled up his sleeves and began setting up the tent while Yao Nian lined up folding chairs in a row. She took out sweets and water from her bags and placed them on the picnic table, casually adding a bouquet of freshly picked wildflowers.
