"Goodbye, Uncle."
Before he could react, the door slammed shut with a bang.
As Yao Nian stepped out of the elevator, a message from Shen Du popped up on WeChat. Three messages in quick succession.
"Send me the license plate number before you get in the car."
"Let me know when you arrive at the dorm."
"And thank you for the pear and orange soup, little girl."
The moment she left, the room fell silent. Shen Du returned to the kitchen, glancing at the half pot of soup remaining, and inexplicably chuckled to himself. It was a bit sweet, but his throat did feel less scratchy. He ladled another bowl from the pot and sat at the dining table, sipping it slowly.
Once dawn broke, the intense exam week began. Even Fang Yiran, who was usually so laid-back, stopped sleeping in and started waking up early to grab spots in the library with Yao Nian and Lin Mo.
She buried her face in her Civil Law notes and lamented, "I can't finish studying! How can anyone create a miracle overnight?"
Lin Mo replied nonchalantly, "Thirty percent depends on effort, seventy percent is fate, and the remaining ten percent relies on a strong teacher-student bond."
That seemed quite harsh, and Yao Nian remarked, "Yiran can only earn some brownie points in front of Xu."
Fang Yiran protested, "Even you are ganging up on me!"
At that moment, her phone screen lit up beside her notes. It was a message from Shen Du asking when she would be on winter break. She had been busy reviewing lately; after Shen Du delivered a camera to her once, they hadn't seen each other again.
Yao Nian typed back.
"The exam is over."
"Have you booked your ticket?"
"I've booked the tickets for tomorrow afternoon."
"Wait for me at school, and I'll take you to the high-speed train station."
Yao Nian wanted to refuse, but then she thought about how she wouldn't see him for an entire month during the winter break. She deleted the conversation and replied with a simple "Okay."
Just as Shen Du was about to turn off his screen, his mother's call came through.
"Are you busy?"
"I just arrived at the law firm," Shen Du pressed the elevator button. "Is your back hurting again?"
"I haven't felt anything for a long time. Dr. Huang keeps urging me to get a massage; that's your doing, isn't it?"
Shen Du chuckled. "It's mainly because you don't realize it. You need to finish this treatment first."
"Now, let's get to the point," his mother said. "Your dad and I discussed it; this year we're going to celebrate the New Year at your grandmother's house. She keeps mentioning you every day."
"Oh." Shen Du stepped out of the elevator.
"Good morning, Shen Du." Xiao Zou at the front desk immediately put down her paperwork and stood up straight.
He nodded and walked toward his office.
"Your grandmother's family is large; this year Zheng Nan's family is coming back for the New Year too. You should prepare more gifts."
Xu Zheng Nan was Shen Du's cousin, his aunt's son, three years younger than him, who had just welcomed a baby boy earlier this year.
He had a nagging feeling that something wasn't right.
Sure enough, after a moment of silence, his mother spoke up again: "How many people are you bringing back this year?"
Shen Du opened the office door and smiled helplessly. "Do you have to be so indirect? We haven't talked about it yet."
His mother sighed. "You're already thirty-two; being single for so long isn't ideal."
Shen Du switched on the speakerphone, poured himself a cup of tea, and sat down on the sofa.
"If you don't like women, at least bring a boyfriend home."
