Her fingertips trembled as she entered the password.
When she saw the balance displayed on the screen, Yao Nian's eyes widened in shock, and she instinctively covered her mouth.
Ten million.
A full ten million.
Yao Nian felt a lump in her throat, collapsing onto the floor as tears streamed through her fingers. So, did he know all along that he would leave her this substantial amount of money?
When Yao Nian returned home, Xu Jiayi, who had taken two days off later than her, surprisingly appeared at the villa's entrance.
"Jiayi?" Yao Nian paused, "When did you come back?"
Seeing her red-rimmed eyes, Xu Jiayi sighed softly, "I was worried about you. I changed my ticket to come back early. Why haven't you been answering your phone?"
"How did you know?"
"This place is neither too big nor too small. Uncle Yao is a major taxpayer in Huaibei; news travels fast."
Yao Nian felt a pang in her heart, her words turning into a sigh as she said, "Thank you."
"Are you okay?" Xu Jiayi asked with concern. "Do you know what exactly happened?"
Yao Nian shook her head. "I just got back from the police station. They said family members can't disclose case information."
"Then why haven't you hired a lawyer yet?"
Yao Nian suddenly looked up at her in realization. "I can't believe I forgot about that!"
During the investigation period, only the investigators and lawyers were allowed to meet with the involved parties. Yao Nian felt utterly flustered by her relatives' interference; as a law student, she had forgotten even the most basic knowledge.
"A lawyer..."
She grabbed her phone and dashed up the stairs.
"Hey, where are you going?" Xu Jiayi called after her.
"To charge my phone!"
In her rush back to Huaibei, she had forgotten to inform Shen Du. She rummaged through her suitcase for the charger and hurriedly plugged it in, waiting impatiently for the screen to light up. Sure enough, a whole row of red dots popped up on WeChat.
She was the first to open the chat window with Shen Du.
"Are you up?"
"I'm almost at school."
"Your roommate said you went back to Huaibei?"
"How do you turn off your phone?"
"Call me back when you see this message."
Just as Yao Nian was about to return his call, Shen Du's phone rang.
"Hello?" His tone clearly relaxed; it seemed he had been waiting for her to pick up.
"Uncle Shen."
As soon as Yao Nian spoke, she realized her voice sounded pitifully distressed.
He paused for a moment, "What's wrong?"
She swallowed the lump in her throat, collected her thoughts, and replied, "I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you that I returned to Huaibei early."
"I see. Did something happen?"
"No," Yao Nian lied, "I just had a little disagreement with my dad."
There was silence on the other end for two seconds.
"Really?"
"Yeah." She sniffed and tried to sound cheerful, "Don't worry, I made plans with Jia Yi to go watch a movie. I'll talk to you later!"
