Halfway through their journey, Shen Du parked the car at a service area.
He picked up his phone and turned to Yao Nian, asking, "I’m going to buy some water. Do you want anything?"
Yao Nian glanced out the window. The service area was less crowded than usual, with only a few cars scattered in the parking lot. After a moment of thought, she unbuckled her seatbelt. "I’ll go with you."
Shen Du walked around to the passenger side and opened the door for her, teasingly saying, "Can’t bear to be away from me for even a moment?"
The cold wind rushed in as Yao Nian shivered and looked at him with exasperation. "I need to use the restroom."
Shen Du chuckled, "Do you want me to accompany you?"
"No!"
Yao Nian could no longer tolerate his teasing and walked briskly into the service area without looking back. Watching her hurried retreat, Shen Du's smile widened.
After using the restroom, Yao Nian washed her hands while pondering how Shen Du had suddenly changed so much. She looked up at her reflection in the mirror and realized her ears were flushed bright red. She quickly fixed her hair on both sides to cover them before stepping out.
As she reached the door, she spotted Shen Du standing with his back to her, absorbed in his phone while casually resting one hand in his coat pocket. He seemed to blend seamlessly with the snowy landscape outside the glass window.
Yao Nian paused for a moment before slowly walking up beside him. "Weren’t you going to buy water?"
Shen Du turned around and naturally took her hand, casually saying, "I was just worried my girl might get lost."
Yao Nian silently averted her gaze. She had never been in a relationship and was unclear about the boundaries of intimacy. However, she often found herself feeling nervous around him, unable to withstand the closeness implied in his words.
The two of them wandered around the small service area for a bit; there weren’t many options available. Yao Nian pointed toward a food truck not far away. "I want to eat oden."
Yao Nian ordered a few items from the hot pot menu: fish tofu, shrimp balls, quail eggs, and added a fortune bag.
Beside her, Shen Du's voice came through: "Just eat a little to fill your stomach; I'll take you out for something later."
She took the plastic bowl handed to her by the server and was about to add some chili sauce when a hand reached across her line of sight, snatching the sauce bottle from her grasp. It squeezed a single drop of chili sauce into her bowl.
Just one drop.
Yao Nian looked at him in dissatisfaction. "What's the difference between this and not adding any at all?"
"Eat less spicy food; it won't be good for your stomach," Shen Du replied, placing the sauce bottle back down.
She speared a piece of fish tofu and popped it into her mouth, muttering, "My stomach is fine."
"Then you should take care of it."
Shen Du looked at her face, which had grown noticeably thinner, and sighed. "People usually gain a few pounds during breaks; you look even skinnier than when school started."
Yao Nian chose not to respond and picked up a shrimp ball, casually asking, "Do you want some?"
Shen Du didn’t answer but bent slightly forward and opened his mouth.
She didn’t hesitate, lifting her arm to feed him the quail egg. "If you eat this, you can't nag me."
The young girl ate quickly, her cheeks puffed out like a chipmunk.
Shen Du pulled out a tissue from his coat pocket and leaned down to wipe the soup off the corner of her mouth.
Suddenly, an incredulous male voice broke through their moment: "Yao Nian?"
Hearing that familiar voice, Yao Nian turned around in confusion.
Zhou Shiyi stood there in shock, staring at them, his bag of snacks dropping from his hands. Beside him stood Zhou Yuan, dressed in a short fur coat.
The four of them exchanged glances, and the atmosphere grew awkward.
