Finally, it was Zhou Yuan who spoke first: "I didn't expect to run into you here."
Zhou Shiyi's expression was complex, his eyes darting between Yao Nian and Shen Du.
Yao Nian cleared her throat and greeted her, "Sister Zhou, what brings you here?"
"We came to pay respects to Shiyi's grandmother," Zhou Yuan replied with a smile.
Zhou Shiyi opened his mouth in disbelief, "You two..."
Shen Du picked up on the question in his tone and boldly took Yao Nian's hand in front of them.
Zhou Shiyi looked as if he had been struck by lightning.
In contrast, Zhou Yuan appeared much calmer. She smiled at Yao Nian and said, "I guessed right after all. At the graduation ceremony..."
"Sister Zhou!" Yao Nian quickly interrupted her, saying, "We’re in a hurry and need to leave right away. Let’s chat next time!"
With that, she swiftly tossed the plastic bowl in her hand into the trash can and dragged Shen Du out.
It wasn't until they got into the car that she finally let out a sigh of relief.
As soon as she turned her head, she saw Shen Du crossing his arms, looking at her with a smirk.
"What... what are you doing?"
"Why are you in such a hurry to leave?" he asked.
Yao Nian felt a bit guilty; they had already greeted each other. If they didn't leave now, would they really stay for dinner?
"That wouldn't be impossible," she thought.
Shen Du rested his chin on his hand, deep in thought. "If a meal could make your little desk mate give up on his feelings, then it would be worth it."
Yao Nian was speechless. "What are you talking about? That was just a joke!"
Just then, her phone screen lit up with several notifications from WeChat.
Shen Du glanced down but showed no intention of looking away.
Yao Nian opened the messages; it was from Zhou Shiyi.
"I need a reasonable explanation."
"Isn't he your uncle?"
"Isn't he a friend of your dad's?"
"I almost thought I was blind just now. You two aren't really dating, are you?"
"I can accept that you don't have feelings for me, but you shouldn't have fallen this low! He could be your dad!"
Yao Nian silently adjusted the screen.
Beside her, Shen Du's voice was calm: "What are you hiding? I've seen it all."
Yao Nian turned off the screen and looked at him nervously. "Are you angry?"
The man leaned back in his chair, his tone indifferent: "It is indeed a bit heartbreaking."
Yao Nian explained, "Don't think too much about it. He's just an exaggerator; we used to joke around a lot. There's really no malice in it."
She hadn't thought much of it at first, but…
Shen Du lightly tapped his fingers on the car window, deliberately elongating his sigh: "Your girlfriend helping another man speak? How can I not think too much about it?"
Yao Nian was taken aback. "When did I help him speak?"
The young girl's slightly parted lips were full and moist, her dark eyes clear as glass beads, filled with confusion as she stared at him without blinking.
Shen Du leaned closer, a playful glint in his eye. "Just teasing you."
"Oh." Yao Nian instinctively averted her gaze, fastening her seatbelt. "That was a good joke, but please don't tease me like that again."
Shen Du couldn't help but laugh. As the engine warmed up, he casually glanced at the phone resting on her lap.
He shifted his gaze back to the road and pressed the accelerator. "Isn't your little desk mate still waiting for your reply?"
Yao Nian paused for a moment; once she understood what he meant, she couldn't help but laugh out loud. Then she picked up her phone and replied to Zhou Shiyi.
"We're really dating; he's my boyfriend."
