After finishing dinner, it was getting late. Shen Du carried the bedsheets into the adjacent bedroom. Yao Nian followed, pushing her suitcase inside and rolling up her sleeves, ready to help.
The room was not small; aside from the lack of a bathroom, its layout was similar to the master bedroom. However, it was clear that no one had lived here before, as the dust cover was still on the nightstand's handle. Shen Du spread out the dark gray bedsheet and shook the mattress a bit, not allowing Yao Nian to assist. In just a few swift motions, he had the bedsheet and duvet laid out.
She squatted down, preparing to open her suitcase on the floor. Shen Du pressed down on her hand. "Who said you could sleep here?"
"Huh?" Yao Nian looked up in surprise.
"You'll sleep in my room," he said, picking up her suitcase and walking toward the master bedroom. "It’s connected to the bathroom, so it’ll be more convenient for you tonight."
Yao Nian stood at the door, hesitant. It didn’t feel right; even if she stayed here, she shouldn’t take over his master bedroom too. Shen Du noticed her thoughts and leaned against the door with one hand, smiling slightly. "You have two choices: either you sleep here or we both sleep here together."
Yao Nian stared at him blankly for two seconds before quickly pulling her suitcase into the room and shutting the door behind her with a decisive motion.
"Goodnight!" she exclaimed. After saying that, her face flushed uncontrollably, feeling as if her previously settled emotions were once again thrown into disarray.
Outside, Shen Du's light laughter echoed back to her. "Get some rest early."
Yao Nian awkwardly replied in acknowledgment. As she heard his footsteps gradually fade away, she took a moment to steady her breathing before turning to wash her face in the bathroom, with only the sound of her heartbeat filling her ears.
Compared to her own bathroom cluttered with bottles and jars, Shen Du's sink was quite minimalist. Aside from hand soap, there was only a bottle of men's facial cleanser and an electric shaver.
After taking her time in the shower and applying moisturizer for what felt like ages, she emerged wrapped in a towel only to realize that she hadn’t packed any pajamas. All that remained were some cashmere sweaters and a few jackets—none of which were suitable for sleeping.
Gripping the edge of the sink, Yao Nian stood by the bed and fell into deep thought as she gazed at the large bed before her. She wasn’t used to sleeping naked, especially not in Shen Du’s bedroom. The idea of lying down under the covers like that made her heart race.
Inwardly, Yao Nian sighed dramatically: "I can't do this!"
After racking her brains without any results, she finally sent a message to Shen Du for help.
"Are you asleep?"
Shen Du replied quickly, likely also looking at his phone.
"Not yet. Can't sleep?"
"I forgot to bring my pajamas."
The WeChat interface showed that he was typing, but the message took a while to come through.
Before long, there was a knock on the door.
Yao Nian jumped, nearly dropping her phone.
Then she heard Shen Du's voice from outside: "There are some cotton short-sleeved shirts on the second shelf to the left of the wardrobe. Just grab one to wear to sleep. I'll buy you new ones tomorrow."
Yao Nian didn't expect him to knock suddenly. Stammering, she replied, "Got it."
She opened the wardrobe and was greeted by a row of neatly ironed dress shirts, mostly in dark colors. Perhaps due to work, Shen Du wore dress shirts quite frequently. In another corner hung a few leather jackets and overcoats.
As she looked down to the second shelf, her gaze fell upon neatly folded men's underwear. Yao Nian paused for a few seconds, feeling as if she had intruded into his private space, and quickly shut the drawer.
From outside came Shen Du's voice again: "Did you find it?"
Had he been standing at the door all this time?
Yao Nian quickly pulled out a white shirt from the top left of the wardrobe and called out towards the door, "I found it!"
