However, they ultimately couldn't watch the movie.
As the two of them were getting ready to leave, Yao Nian suddenly received a call from Qiao Shuzhen. She stared blankly at the phone after hanging up and looked at Shen Du. "My mom said she's almost in Shanghai."
Shen Du, just putting on his coat, was a bit surprised. "She knows about Yao Zong's situation?"
"I mentioned it to her a while back, but I didn't expect her to rush back so quickly," Yao Nian said, feeling a bit guilty. "I might not be able to go see the movie with you."
"Don't say silly things," Shen Du chuckled helplessly. "Meeting your mom is more important."
Calculating the days, it had been nearly half a year since Yao Nian had seen Qiao Shuzhen after the college entrance exams. It would be a lie to say she didn’t miss her; now that they were about to meet, she felt a bit dazed.
Qiao Shuzhen had booked a hotel in Shanghai ahead of time and quickly sent Yao Nian the address. On the way to the hotel, Shen Du noticed that the young girl had been silent, staring out the window in a daze.
During a red light, Shen Du held her hand gently, offering comfort. "Do you need me to accompany you?"
Yao Nian snapped back to reality and shook her head lightly. "I just haven't seen her in so long that I don't know how to face her."
The relationship between mothers and daughters should be the closest bond, yet her current confusion and helplessness made Shen Du realize that the divorce of her parents had caused her far more pain than she let on.
Shen Du pressed down on the brake and spoke softly, "Just spend some time with your mom. It's been so long since you've seen her; she must miss you."
Yao Nian nodded slightly.
After watching the young girl’s figure disappear at the hotel entrance, he stepped on the gas and drove away.
Yao Nian waited in the lobby for a little while. When Qiao Shuzhen finally appeared before her, she almost didn’t recognize her. The woman had cut her long hair, which used to reach her waist, to shoulder length and dyed it chestnut brown. She wore a brown oversized fur coat that reached her ankles, with a belt casually tied around her waist, resembling a noblewoman stepping out of an oil painting from the European Renaissance.
Qiao Shuzhen set down her suitcase and stepped forward to embrace Yao Nian tightly.
Yao Nian felt a tickling sensation as her chin brushed against Qiao Shuzhen's collar.
Qiao Shuzhen scrutinized Yao Nian for a moment and sighed, "Why have you gotten so thin?"
"You didn't even tell me you were coming back; I would have picked you up at the airport."
"I originally planned to rush back before New Year's to spend it with you, but I got caught in a snowstorm in Edinburgh that delayed me quite a bit."
As they were talking, a tall man approached them and handed Qiao Shuzhen a room key card.
The man had golden hair and blue eyes, with deep-set features that epitomized the typical European look.
Yao Nian observed him for a moment before suddenly realizing something.
"I forgot to introduce you," Qiao Shuzhen said with a smile as she linked her arm with the man's. "This is my boyfriend."
Yao Nian's eyes widened in surprise.
The man extended his hand and greeted her in broken Chinese, "You."
Qiao Shuzhen translated for him: "He said he didn't expect you to be so beautiful."
Yao Nian slowly reached out to shake his hand, still somewhat stunned by the words "my boyfriend."
After exchanging a few more words, the man quickly picked up his suitcase and headed upstairs.
"Come on," Qiao Shuzhen said as she draped her arm over Yao Nian's shoulder. "Mom will take you to eat first."
When Yao Nian spoke, there was a slight pause. "Just the two of us?"
