Yao Nian did not deny it. Was it that obvious? The way you just replied to the message, it was as if those three words were written all over your face.
Her reaction didn’t seem overly surprised, which eased Yao Nian a bit. They had just started dating, so she hadn’t had the chance to tell her yet.
The waitress brought over two drinks; Qiao Shuzhen ordered a hot cocoa for Yao Nian and a velvet latte for herself.
"At this hour, you're still drinking coffee? Aren't you afraid you won't be able to sleep?" Yao Nian asked, lifting her cup to warm her hands.
"I'll just treat it as adjusting my body clock," Qiao Shuzhen replied, stirring her drink with a slender coffee spoon, raising an eyebrow playfully. "So, what about that pear and orange soup?"
Yao Nian's cheeks flushed slightly as she softly hummed in response.
She asked with genuine curiosity, "I was really wondering what kind of boy could make my daughter, who never steps foot in the kitchen, actually cook?"
To be precise, Yao Nian felt a bit uneasy. "He shouldn’t be considered a boy."
Qiao Shuzhen paused, waiting for her to continue.
Yao Nian wasn’t sure how Qiao Shuzhen would react to her dating someone much older than herself, so she observed her expression while carefully choosing her words: "He’s quite a bit older than me, and you should know him."
Sure enough, Qiao Shuzhen looked even more puzzled as she tried to think of someone who fit that description. "Who exactly is it?" she pressed eagerly.
Yao Nian took a sip of her hot cocoa, inhaled deeply, and slowly exhaled before saying, "Shen Du."
To ensure she understood, she added, "He’s the lawyer who handled your divorce case with Dad."
Qiao Shuzhen’s mouth fell open in shock. She had never met this Lawyer Shen; during the hurried divorce process, they had only communicated briefly over the phone. Since he was Yao Zhandong's attorney, Qiao Shuzhen's tone had not been friendly when discussing divorce matters with him.
They stared at each other for a while before she finally spoke in a low voice, "Did he make the first move?"
Seeing her expression shift, Yao Nian quickly clarified, "I liked him first!"
Qiao Shuzhen frowned. "You just turned twenty after the New Year. At your age, it's easy for an older man to take advantage of you."
"Are you afraid that I might be deceived?"
Her tone became considerably serious. "You are like a blank slate when it comes to relationships, and I can't help but question his motives."
Yao Nian put down her chopsticks and shared every detail of her interactions with Shen Du, leaving nothing out. She wanted to make her believe that he was truly a wonderful person.
"Mom," Yao Nian said earnestly, looking her in the eye, "when you first left, I admit I did blame you. I wanted to ask why you abandoned me, why you didn't take me with you. For a long time, I was trapped in those feelings and couldn't move past them."
Tears welled up in Qiao Shuzhen's eyes, filled with unspoken emotions.
"It was he who told me that everyone has the right to choose their own way of life. Now that I see you with a new partner, I genuinely feel happy for you."
In the girl's clear eyes, there was a glimmer of hope.
"Being with him makes me feel like the future is something to look forward to."
Qiao Shuzhen remained silent for a long time.
"Can I meet him?"
Yao Nian was taken aback. "But we've only just started dating. Isn't it a bit too soon to meet the parents?"
"It doesn't have to be as parents; I just want to get to know this person you've spoken so highly of."
"Then I'll ask for his opinion when I get back."
Upon hearing the phrase "get back," Qiao Shuzhen stared at her for a moment. "Are you two living together?"
Yao Nian realized what she meant and felt embarrassed. "Don't think too much into it; nothing has happened between us."
