Yao Nian got into the car and turned to Shen Du, starting to question him. "Didn't I just reply to you? How did you get here so quickly?"
Shen Du fastened her seatbelt, having been nearby, he came over directly.
"Didn't I give you a hint?" she retorted.
He raised an eyebrow. "You didn't want me to meet your mother?"
"Not exactly," Yao Nian paused. "I just told her about us, and then we ran into each other. It feels a bit awkward."
Shen Du smiled without saying a word.
Yao Nian scrutinized him. "Aren't you curious about how she reacted?"
"I can guess. An older man trying to charm a naive young girl."
"Not quite that serious," she replied.
Shen Du gently pinched her cheek. "Wasn't I the one who charmed you?"
Yao Nian laughed for a while before slowly recounting her meeting with Qiao Shuzhen earlier that day. "Actually, I can tell my mom has a pretty good impression of you."
"Hmm?" Shen Du didn’t think such a brief encounter could change Qiao Shuzhen's long-held views.
Yao Nian teased him with a smile. "Why do you think she would be willing to let me come home with you?"
Her laughter made her already stunning appearance even more radiant.
Once home, Yao Nian had just taken off her shoes when she spotted the pair of lemon-yellow fuzzy slippers with little bear ears on the shoe rack.
"Wow!" She picked up the slippers and looked at Shen Du. "You actually bought such childish slippers!"
"Childish?" Shen Du recalled her plush Duck pajamas. "I thought you'd like something like this."
As Yao Nian headed to the bathroom for a shower, she noticed two new sets of pajamas laid out on the bed and several bottles of women's shower gel and shampoo on the rack.
"You have to come back tomorrow," Shen Mu's voice was filled with reproach over the phone. "You haven't shown your face since the New Year; what kind of behavior is that?"
When Yao Nian finished her shower and came out, Shen Du was standing by the window, talking on the phone, looking somewhat helpless.
As she stepped out, he pointed to the freshly washed strawberries on the dining table and continued speaking into the phone, "I did have something before."
"Are you busier than a national leader? Anyway, we have a family gathering tomorrow, and you must come back. No negotiation."
He turned his head to glance at Yao Nian. The young girl had half-damp hair cascading over her chest, holding a bowl of strawberries while sitting cross-legged on the sofa, having propped a cushion against her waist.
Watching her chew on the strawberries like a squirrel, Shen Du couldn't help but smile.
"Alright, I'll be back tomorrow."
After hanging up the phone, Shen Du reached over to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear. His palm felt damp; why hadn’t she dried her hair?
Yao Nian shrugged it off, picking up the remote to select a movie on the TV. "It's too long; my hand is getting sore from blowing it dry."
"You'll catch a cold like this."
She waved her hand dismissively. "With the heating turned up so high, it’ll dry in no time."
Finally, Shen Du forcibly pulled Yao Nian back to the bathroom and dried her hair for her.
It was still not even eight o'clock; neither of them was ready to sleep so early. They snuggled on the sofa and decided to watch a movie.
Shen Du thought she would prefer some light romantic films or comedies. However, Yao Nian suddenly felt adventurous and picked a horror movie titled "Paper Wedding Dress."
His brow twitched slightly as he wrapped an arm around Yao Nian and asked, "Are you sure you won't be scared?"
"I will," Yao Nian replied, popping a strawberry into his mouth. "Lin Mo strongly recommended this movie to me before, but I was too scared to watch it alone. Watching it together makes it less frightening!"
