It was nearly ten o'clock when Shen Du arrived in Shanghai. After dropping his parents off at home, he glanced at his phone. Aside from a friend request from Ren Ran, there were no new messages from Yao Nian.
Shen Du guessed she was still out and thought about calling to see if he should pick her up on the way home. But then he remembered she was with his mother, and there seemed to be no reason to worry.
As he drove into the community and noticed the lights on in the living room, he unconsciously quickened his pace up the stairs.
When he opened the door, he gently called out, "Yao Nian?"
There was no response as he had expected.
He slipped on his slippers and walked into the living room. The young girl was curled up on the sofa like a cat, her legs slightly bent, half of her face buried in a cushion, sleeping soundly.
Shen Du stepped forward and took the remote control from her hand before it slipped away, turning off the television. His gaze lingered on her for a moment, a hint of tenderness flickering in his eyes.
He leaned down, preparing to carry her to the bedroom for a proper sleep.
Yao Nian squinted and opened her eyes slowly, looking at him with some confusion. "Oh, you're back."
"What time did you get home?" Shen Du asked softly.
"I came right after shopping," she replied.
Yao Nian reached out to wrap her arms around his neck, using him to pull herself up from the sofa.
Shen Du instinctively lifted her onto his lap without saying a word. "Have you been waiting long?"
"I figured you were driving and didn't want to distract you with my messages."
Her words inevitably reminded him of the past.
Shen Du understood that Ren Ran needed that sense of security through constant communication, but it often left him unable to fully immerse himself in anything else. He had to keep an eye on her emotions all the time, which over time had worn him down.
However, Yao Nian's attitude was unexpected; there were no urges or questions. This complete trust brought a sense of relaxation that Shen Du hadn’t felt in a long time.
His heart softened involuntarily as he smiled and asked, "Did you buy any clothes tonight?"
"Oh right!"
She jumped off his lap and ran barefoot into the bedroom, returning with two shopping bags. "I got you a scarf and picked out a tie. Try them on!"
Shen Du paused for a moment.
The deep brown wool scarf was simple yet elegant, soft to the touch. Most of his winter coats were dark-colored, so it would pair well without any risk of clashing.
Considering he often had to appear in court where serious colors were more appropriate, Yao Nian had chosen a black tie for him. Upon closer inspection, one could see delicate water wave patterns printed on it.
As Shen Du wrapped the scarf around his neck, he asked, "What about you?"
The scarf suited Shen Du's temperament remarkably well; it could be said that his features were exceptionally handsome, making him look good in anything he wore.
Yao Nian rested her chin on her hands, gazing at him. She had bought a spring jacket and a dress, but they were just single purchases.
"Should I reciprocate then?" she asked playfully.
She smiled mischievously, "What identity will you use to give me this gift?"
Knowing she was asking for fun, Shen Du pecked her on the lips and replied, "As your boyfriend."
"I actually have a question," Yao Nian said, resting her head on his lap and blinking at him.
Shen Du pinched her earlobe, wearing an expression of attentive curiosity.
"When did you..."
