It was a rare weekend, and the two of them lingered in bed for quite a while, leisurely discussing their plans for the day before finally getting up. This was the first official date with Shen Du, so Yao Nian decided to put on a light makeup before heading out.
As she tied her hair up and prepared to wash her face, she glanced at herself in the mirror and nearly jumped in shock. Her lips were swollen, and her neck down to her collarbone was covered in a myriad of red marks, varying in intensity—an alarming sight indeed.
A flurry of images flooded her mind. Fuming, she marched into the kitchen to confront the culprit. "How am I supposed to go out looking like this?"
Shen Du set down his bowl of congee and approached her, scrutinizing her closely. The girl’s skin was already fair, and the faint marks stood out starkly against it. It seemed he had been a bit too rough.
He reached out and gently stroked the skin between her neck, chuckling as he spoke, "How about I give you some more next time?"
Yao Nian shot him a glare. "There won't be a next time."
Thus, on a sunny day in the blooming spring season, Yao Nian spent nearly an hour fussing around in her room before finally wrapping a scarf around her neck and heading out.
In Shen Du's eyes, the girl’s attempt to cover up only drew more attention to the marks. However, he knew he was at fault and dared not say much for fear of provoking her further.
Twenty minutes before the movie started, Shen Du could no longer bear it; he dragged Yao Nian to a nearby mall to buy a silk scarf to replace hers.
The sales clerk enthusiastically explained how to tie the scarf, and before Yao Nian could stop her, the young woman had already reached for the scarf around Yao Nian's neck to try it on for her.
The air froze for three seconds.
The clerk glanced at the man beside the girl and flashed an ambiguous smile.
Yao Nian felt utterly embarrassed and hurriedly pulled Shen Du away from the designer store after he finished paying.
When they reached the theater and were waiting in line for tickets, Yao Nian looked around and pointed towards a nearby coffee shop. "I want to grab a cup of coffee. Do you want some?"
Shen Du asked, "Are you tired?"
Yao Nian admitted honestly, "I woke up too early this morning. I'm afraid I'll fall asleep during the movie."
"Then go ahead; I'll get the tickets and join you afterward."
It was the weekend, and they happened to catch the premiere of a Marvel film. The cinema was busier than usual. After placing an order on her phone, Yao Nian found a less crowded spot to wait.
"Yao Nian?"
A pair of black Salomon shoes caught her eye.
She looked up and saw Yu Yi, standing next to a man who looked familiar but whom she didn't recognize; he was probably from the law school.
"Are you here for the premiere too?" Yu Yi's voice was filled with surprise.
"Yeah," Yao Nian replied with a chuckle.
Yu Yi scratched the back of his head. "I sent you a message before, but you never replied. I came to find you during the last semester break, but Lin Mo said you had gone home early."
"I'm sorry," Yao Nian said. "There were some issues at home, so I didn't pay much attention to my messages."
"Oh? Was it serious?" Yu Yi asked quickly. "Do you need my help?"
"No, no, it's already been resolved."
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Shen Du walking towards them.
Yu Yi looked around and touched his nose. "Did you come alone? Do you want to sit with us?"
Just as he finished speaking, a warm voice interjected, "We can almost go in now."
Yao Nian was about to introduce him when she heard Yu Yi exclaim in surprise, "You’re Shen Du, Senior Shen?"
Shen Du paused for a moment and nodded slightly. "Hello."
"You know each other?" Yao Nian looked between the two of them.
Yu Yi quickly replied, "Last semester, Senior Shen came to our school to give a lecture. I happened to attend; it was fantastic!" He glanced at the two movie tickets in the man's hand and abruptly stopped mid-sentence, as if sensing an underlying meaning.
"Are you all here to watch the movie together?"
