Yao Nian and Lin Mo took turns trying to persuade Fang Yiran, who had been on the verge of breaking up. Just when she seemed determined, Cheng Xu sent her two heartfelt messages, and the silly girl hesitated again.
Lin Mo rolled her eyes. Great, a ping on WeChat, and all that effort was for nothing.
Yao Nian couldn't help but say, "You need to understand that someone who can betray you once will definitely betray you again."
Fang Yiran sniffled softly. "I get it, but I'm still sad. We were so good together before—why did he suddenly change?"
Lin Mo opened her mouth but decided against it. "Forget it; I can be a bit harsh with my words."
Yao Nian sighed. "Just give her some time."
"You ladies want some beer?" a deep voice interjected.
A man slightly hunched over, casually holding a case of beer. His demeanor was relaxed, but there was a roguish charm in his expression. He had a buzz cut, and the silver earring in his left ear caught the dim light, making it quite eye-catching. Dressed in a leather jacket and fitted pants, he had a tall and upright figure.
Lin Mo blinked and silently mouthed to Yao Nian, "He's handsome."
Yao Nian smiled helplessly and picked up her phone from the table. "How much is it?"
The man raised an eyebrow. "Is this your first time here?"
"Yes," Lin Mo chimed in. "Is there a discount for first-timers?"
He turned his gaze to Yao Nian. "Let me introduce myself; I'm the owner of this bar, Xiao Chi—'Chi' as in galloping across the battlefield."
Xiao Chi pulled out his phone and tapped a few times. "We have a promotion for new customers. If you help me with a survey, I'll give you the beer for free."
"How do we do that?" Yao Nian asked.
The man lazily draped one arm over the back of the chair and handed her a QR code. "Add me on WeChat, and I'll send you the survey link later."
Yao Nian found it troublesome; besides, the three of them wouldn't drink much anyway. Just as she was about to decline, she felt Lin Mo nudge her elbow and whisper in her ear, "Hurry up and add him; then pass it to me."
Reluctantly, Yao Nian added him on WeChat.
Xiao Chi looked at the friend request on his screen and smiled slightly as he placed the beer on their table. "By the way, there's a live band performing at ten o'clock tonight, so no need to rush off."
After Xiao Chi left, Lin Mo excitedly pressed her voice down and exclaimed, "Wow, wow, wow! So handsome, he's totally my type!"
Yao Nian laughed, "I never would have guessed you liked this kind."
"Well, I can't say I like him," Lin Mo said, her gaze lingering on his retreating figure. "I just appreciate a handsome guy. Look at those broad shoulders, narrow waist, and long legs—he's practically walking hormones!"
"Hey, hey, hey!" Fang Yiran interjected, clearly dissatisfied. "I'm the one who's feeling down right now!"
Lin Mo pulled her gaze away and opened a can of beer. "I'll keep you company tonight, but you have to promise me—after tonight, no more contact with that jerk!"
"Fine," Yao Nian said as she opened another can and poured it out. "If that's how we're doing it, I'll join you."
The three girls raised their glasses and downed their drinks in one go. The frothy bubbles spilled over the rims of their cups. Suddenly, Fang Yiran shouted, "Wisdom doesn't fall into the river of love!"
Yao Nian and Lin Mo exchanged glances and burst into laughter, chiming in unison, "The lonely king goes straight to the PhD!"
In a brightly lit office building, only one office in the large law firm still had its lights on.
Shen Du went over the legal opinion he had just written once more to ensure there were no omissions before shutting down his computer and preparing to leave for the day.
Before turning off the machine, he glanced at the bottom right corner of the screen; he had finished work quite a bit earlier than usual today. Thinking that the young girl was probably still awake at this hour, Shen Du decided not to rush home. He took off his glasses and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window to call her.
The busy signal came through the phone, causing Shen Du to frown. Aside from being in class, Yao Nian rarely missed calls. He tried again but received no answer until it automatically hung up.
In the bar's restroom, Fang Yiran looked dazed as she leaned over the toilet, retching repeatedly. Yao Nian gently patted her back to help her feel better as she tried to throw up.
