Yao Nian raised her head and glanced at the front of the line. "I might be a bit late; there are so many people here."
"Alright, let me know when you’re close. I’ll come out to meet you."
After hanging up, she walked back to Ji Zheyuan and took out a red envelope from the lining of her suit, handing it to him.
"Here, for the newlyweds."
Ji Zheyuan weighed the thick envelope, which was as hefty as a dictionary, and immediately grinned. "This is generous of you! Looks like my buddy has some extra cash now."
"You better keep it hidden," Shen Du chuckled.
Most of the guests had already entered, and as the two were about to head inside, a woman arrived fashionably late, her silver high heels clicking on the floor.
Ji Zheyuan's gaze froze for a moment, his first instinct was to look at Shen Du.
"Ren Ran?" he asked awkwardly. "What are you doing here?"
Ren Ran smiled as she pulled out a red envelope from her bag and playfully chided him, "Zheyuan, how could you not tell me about such a big event like your wedding?"
Ji Zheyuan scratched his head sheepishly. "I’ve been so busy lately that I almost forgot you were back."
"So I just showed up uninvited. You don’t mind, do you?"
He glanced at Shen Du and chuckled dryly. "What are you talking about? I’m happy you came!"
As a guest, especially since the ceremony was about to start, Ji Zheyuan couldn’t let her stand around awkwardly and quickly invited her to take a seat.
Her arrival was unexpected; the seating in the banquet hall had been arranged in advance, but they had left two spots open at the friends' table.
With no other options available, Ji Zheyuan had no choice but to let her sit with Shen Du.
"Hey, buddy," he patted Shen Du on the shoulder with a serious expression. "I know this situation is a bit awkward, but as you can see, there’s really no other place for her. Please bear with it."
"Alright, just go backstage," Shen Du replied.
Although Ren Ran had only met Ji Zheyuan through Shen Du, she was still an old friend of many years. It was perfectly reasonable for her to attend his wedding, so Shen Du didn’t have any objections.
The only issue was that he would have to explain things to the young lady.
This table mostly consisted of Ji Zheyuan's classmates and friends from over the years, some of whom recognized Ren Ran and knew about their past relationship.
As she took her seat and greeted everyone, they all responded with surprise and warmth.
A woman with shoulder-length hair was the first to speak up. "Oh my! Isn’t this Ren Ran?"
Liu Qingqing cast a flirtatious glance at Shen Du and said, "I heard from Haozi that you went to the United States for development. What brings you back?"
Ren Ran chuckled, "It's only after going abroad that you realize how great our country is."
The man sitting opposite her immediately chimed in with a grin, "It's been so many years since we last met, and Xiao Ran hasn't changed a bit. You're still as beautiful as ever!"
"Zhengyuan, I heard your wife just gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Now that you're a dad, why are you still so chatty?"
Everyone burst into laughter, teasing Yang Zhengyuan about his inability to resist beautiful women.
One couldn't help but admire Ren Ran's graceful demeanor; she was charming and engaging while maintaining just the right amount of restraint. After some casual banter, the atmosphere at the table quickly became lively.
Liu Qingqing shot an annoyed look at Shen Du. "Shen the Lawyer, you've kept this under wraps pretty well. You must have known Ren Ran was back long before us. Why didn't you say anything? We could have welcomed her properly."
"Yeah!" came the chorus of agreement.
Shen Du replied nonchalantly, "No, I just found out too."
Ren Ran couldn't help but steal a glance at him.
Another man in a gray coat teased Shen Du, "Hey, back in our dorm, you were the one all the girls liked the most. Now it seems you're the only one left unmarried!"
The man was Zhong Tianhao, their college roommate. After graduating, he had landed a stable job and was now a judge at the Rongcheng Court. He had come back specifically to attend Ji Zheyuan's wedding.
Shen Du nodded with a smile, feeling somewhat sentimental.
Yang Zhengyuan asked in confusion, "What's going on with you? If I looked like you, I'd have been married at least three times by now."
Liu Qingqing shot him a glare. "And you have the nerve to say that? Look at you now—if someone wanted you, you'd be counting your blessings!"
Zhong Tianhao sincerely asked Shen Du, "Now that even Yuanzi is married, aren't you even a little anxious?"
Shen Du glanced at his phone screen and smirked slightly.
"Mainly because my girlfriend is too young; she's not of legal marrying age yet."
