Shen Du bent down to meet her gaze. "I've been separated from Ren Ran for three years now. I can assure you that we have never contacted each other privately during this time, including today. I had no idea she would come."
Yao Nian pouted. "If Sister Xiaolin hadn't mentioned it, would you have planned to say anything at all?"
"Of course not." Shen Du crouched down and took off her shoes gently, speaking softly, "Let's go inside first. I'll explain everything slowly, okay?"
Yao Nian sat on the sofa while Shen Du squatted in front of her, legs bent. "I was planning to come back and tell you about this as soon as I found out she was here."
Shen Du felt a twinge of annoyance; Ren Ran's casual mention of that dinner was clearly intended to provoke Yao Nian. He slowly recounted the process of their breakup, explaining that during that visit when she came to see the old lady, he had already made it clear that there was no possibility between them anymore.
Yao Nian had never doubted Shen Du's feelings for her and knew that it wasn't right to take out her frustration on him. The only thing that puzzled her was why he had never mentioned running into Ren Ran even once during all this time.
"I was worried you might feel uncomfortable," Shen Du said. "Besides, I thought I could handle it."
"But if you really could handle it, why did tonight happen?" she challenged.
He suddenly found himself at a loss for words.
So Yao Nian stared at him, enunciating each word carefully. "In your eyes, I'm just a child, aren't I?"
Shen Du hesitated. "No..."
Yao Nian pressed her lips together tightly. "And up until now, your family doesn't even know I exist, do they?"
What truly hurt her wasn't just Ren Ran's appearance; it was the realization that Shen Du seemed to have no plans to include her in his future. It felt as if he was only interested in having a relationship for the sake of it.
Shen Du forced a bitter smile. "I admit I haven't told them because I wanted to leave you enough room to back out."
Yao Nian's throat tightened. "What do you mean by 'back out'?"
His voice was soft but struck Yao Nian like a blunt force against her heart. "I didn't want you to face pressure from my family too soon, and I wasn't sure if you'd regret choosing to be with me later on—after all, you're still very young."
At that moment, Yao Nian truly realized the gap created by their age difference between them.
So she didn't need to know these things.
She didn't need the approval of his family.
Just because she was younger, she naturally assumed she should be the one being cared for.
And precisely because she was younger, the initiative in their relationship had never been in her hands.
Yao Nian looked at him and suddenly laughed self-deprecatingly. It wasn't uncertainty; it was that he assumed she would regret it.
After saying this, she stood up and walked toward the entrance in a daze.
Shen Du furrowed his brow and quickly grabbed her arm. "Where are you going?"
"Back to school."
Yao Nian took a deep breath, trying to control her pace as she spoke slowly. "I promise I won't lose my temper with you, but I just want to be alone right now."
Hearing her calm tone, Shen Du felt a surge of urgency. "I'd rather you get angry. It's too late tonight; let me drive you back, okay?"
"No."
Shen Du was at a loss for what to do. "Then I'll take you."
"Don't."
Just then, his phone rang inappropriately. He picked up the device from the coffee table, silencing it without even glancing at the caller ID.
In the blink of an eye, the door slammed shut behind her.
"Yao Nian!" Shen Du shouted, quickly opening the door and rushing after her.
Yao Nian rarely acted so willfully. She stared blankly out of the car window as a layer of mist formed before her eyes.
