"Lin Mo, could you please let Yao Nian take a phone call?"
Lin Mo glanced at Yao Nian and hesitated. "It's not that I don't want her to answer, but she said she wanted to sleep as soon as she got back. She's already lying in bed now."
Seeing him fall silent, Lin Mo tentatively suggested, "How about I have her call you back tomorrow?"
After the call ended, Shen Du rubbed his temples, feeling a sense of helplessness as if things were going against his wishes. His gaze fell on the coffee table, where several unopened bags of chips and egg yolk rolls lay.
The young girl loved to curl up on the sofa watching movies or playing on her phone when she had free time, her mouth never idle for a moment. The yellow bear slippers by the entrance, her bathrobe and pajamas hanging on the balcony rack, and the array of skincare products and masks cluttering the bathroom sink all bore witness to her presence.
Aside from the stuffed toy she had insisted on taking with her, it seemed that every corner of this house had been filled with traces of her existence over time.
Yao Nian was right; he had indeed held back in this relationship, but it was never his intention to hurt her. He understood the unpredictability of life and wasn't sure if the young girl chose to be with him out of a momentary impulse or for the sense of security that came from having someone who could be both a father and a brother to her.
He only hoped to give her enough space—at least to let her experience a complete relationship so that if other choices arose in the future, she wouldn't regret it.
But now, Shen Du vaguely realized that he couldn't be so resolute after all.
Lin Mo put down her phone and shrugged at Yao Nian. "Is this good enough?"
The girl nodded despondently.
She sighed. "Why do you have to make it so difficult? Even if you argued, what’s wrong with talking things through properly?"
"We didn't argue," Yao Nian replied softly. "I just... need some time to think."
Lin Mo looked puzzled. "But Lawyer Shen treats you so well. Why is that not enough?"
Her gaze dropped slightly. "I know he cares for me, but it seems like he never considers a future with me."
"What future? Marriage?"
Yao Nian looked up at her. "If you had someone you really liked, wouldn't you want a future with them?"
Lin Mo felt that Yao Nian was thinking too far ahead. "Isn't it more about being anxious for him? After all, he's in his thirties. How old are you?"
Yao Nian mumbled, "We’re already together. Why does he think I would definitely regret it?"
"Wait a minute," Lin Mo said, as understanding dawned on her. "I think I get what you're saying now."
"Isn't it true that outsiders see things more clearly?" Lin Moxi said to her. "Think about it, you've never been in a relationship before, right?"
Yao Nian nodded.
"He's your first boyfriend, isn't he?"
She nodded again.
"He must be worried that you're still young and might change your mind, so he doesn't want to tie you down and is leaving you an out."
After saying this, Lin Moxi sighed, "Wow, Lawyer Shen has suddenly become so impressive in my eyes."
Yao Nian was taken aback.
Lin Moxi grabbed the pajamas hanging on the chair and headed toward the bathroom. "Every day, I'm just worrying about you and Yi Ran. I'm going to take a shower now; you should think about this yourself."
"Wait a minute." Yao Nian called out to her, feeling it necessary to tell Lin Moxi, "I just ran into Xiao Chi at the school gate."
Lin Moxi looked puzzled. "Who is Xiao Chi?"
"Do you remember the owner of that bar? The one from last time?"
"Oh, him," Lin Moxi waved her hand dismissively. "I almost forgot about him since you didn't mention it. What's up?"
"Aren't you quite fond of him?" Yao Nian asked suspiciously.
"What do you mean 'fond'? I just appreciate him," Lin Moxi sighed. "That day, I added him on WeChat. Do you know what he told me?"
"What?"
Her gaze turned serious. "He said he has his eye on you."
Yao Nian's expression nearly cracked open. "Please don't misunderstand; I really—"
"Oh, you don't need to explain. I know you didn't mean it that way. There are countless handsome guys in this world; am I supposed to hang myself on just one tree?"
