That night, Yao Nian slept restlessly.
In a half-dream, she found herself back at the wedding venue. Sunlight streamed through the stained glass windows, casting a kaleidoscope of light and shadow. A woman in a pure white gown stood on a path adorned with pale pink roses, resembling an angel descending from above.
At the end of the aisle stood a man in a tailored suit, slowly turning to face the person approaching him, his eyes gentle as water. A breeze swept through, causing the veil atop the bride's head to dance with her steps.
In that moment, she clearly saw the woman's face. Amidst the guests' joyful blessings, Ren Ran held Shen Du's hand and smiled at her, saying, "Look, his future still belongs to me."
The next second, Yao Nian jolted awake.
Struggling between confusion and clarity, an intense pang of heartache surged through her chest. Tears instantly filled her eyes as she buried her face in her pillow, stifling a sob and desperately trying not to cry out loud. At that moment, her longing for him reached its peak.
She instinctively reached for the space beside her pillow but found it empty. Fang Yi had taken two days off to return home early, leaving only her and Lin Mo in the dormitory.
At three in the morning, worried about waking Lin Mo, Yao Nian tiptoed out of bed and quietly pulled her suitcase from under the desk. She unzipped the side pocket and took out a photo frame.
She remembered that night when he attended her graduation ceremony; the moment he stepped into the hall in formal attire, nothing else mattered to her anymore. All she could see was him.
The photo taken by Zhou Yuan perfectly captured the moment when the girl first experienced love's fluttering sensation. She stared at it for a long time, lost in thought.
If there were deities watching over them, they would surely hear her racing heartbeat in this tranquil night. Love at first sight felt too shallow; deepening affection seemed too pale—yet that one glance I stole at you was like a fleeting glimpse of brilliance.
The next day in class, Yao Nian was completely distracted; Lin Mo called her several times without getting a response.
"Hey, hey, Yao Nian?" Lin Mo tapped on the table.
She snapped back to reality and glanced at the passionate Criminal Law professor at the podium, then whispered, "What’s up?"
"I need to slip out early. Can you cover for me?"
"Where are you going?" Yao Nian asked.
"My high school roommate is in town to visit me. I'm going to pick her up from the airport. I won't be back this weekend," Lin Mo replied, then ducked under the table and quietly made her way toward the door.
Just then, Professor Xu finished writing on the board and turned around. Yao Nian quickly cleared her throat and shot Lin Mo a warning glance.
Lin Mo managed to sneak out of the classroom while Yao Nian rested her chin on her hand, continuing to stare blankly at the podium.
When the bell rang, she checked her watch, thinking that Shen Du should still be at the law firm.
As she stepped out of the classroom, a sudden commotion erupted in front of her.
Yao Nian was stuck inside and couldn't figure out what was happening, but she noticed many classmates glancing in her direction.
Confused, she was about to navigate around the crowd when Xiao Chi's figure suddenly appeared before her.
The man wore a black leather jacket, leaning against a stone pillar like a rebellious youth. With his long legs crossed and a huge bouquet of red roses in his arms, he raised an eyebrow and whistled at her when their eyes met.
He looked utterly debauched.
