"Do you remember the business card that Sister Zhou gave you?"
Shen Du looked up at her, his throat tightening. "Huh?"
"You left it in the car, and I took it without you knowing because I didn't want you to contact her. And when school started, I didn't reach out to you because I thought you had a girlfriend."
Shen Du was confused by her words. Where did this girlfriend come from?
As they spoke, Yao Nian suddenly choked up, her voice trembling as she said, "From the day I met you, I never saw you as an elder. In fact, long before that, I... I liked you."
After saying this, her lashes could no longer bear the weight of her tears and fell freely onto the back of his hand.
She laid bare her buried feelings, just to prove that even before she expressed her feelings for him, she had secretly liked him for a long time.
Yao Nian struggled to hold back her sobs. "I haven't experienced a breakup, nor do I have someone else I like. The moon I've been talking about has always been you."
He pressed down the shock in his heart and reached out to wipe the dampness from the corners of her eyes, his Adam's apple bobbing.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Yao Nian swallowed the bitterness in her throat. "I was afraid. Afraid you'd think I'm too young, afraid that if you knew, you wouldn't want to talk to me anymore."
"That summer after the college entrance exams, when I met you, all my definitions of love became tangible. Now, with all my sincerity, I want to tell you that from beginning to end, you've always been my most steadfast choice. It’s because of your existence that I feel the future is something worth looking forward to."
"So..."
"Can you not give me a chance to regret? Can you just choose me steadfastly like this?"
Shen Du lowered his head and looked at the photo again, his voice hoarse. "Can I have this photo?"
Yao Nian nodded while sniffing.
He gazed at the girl in front of him, his deep black eyes swirling with countless emotions that were hard to decipher.
Earlier she had said so sadly: "I like him, but he doesn't like me."
"Can we not ask about it anymore?"
Yet he truly did.
He found himself lost in memories of that camping night, when the young girl leaned back in her chair, gazing up at the night sky, her eyes sparkling like stars. He was a man like the moon.
An indescribable emotion swirled in Shen Du's mind, akin to a clump of cotton soaked with water, bittersweet with threads of sweetness woven through. It turned out that in days he had not noticed, he had allowed his girl to be sad for so long.
How could I bear to ignore you?
With that thought, Shen Du lifted her tear-streaked chin and pressed his lips firmly against hers. His heavy breaths were like a beast lying in wait, infused with the faint scent of alcohol, slowly feeding her the scorching warmth of his breath.
As their lips intertwined, the man's strength felt as if he intended to crush her into his very being. Yao Nian felt her heart suffocate, ignited like a spark, both painful and itchy. Her arms went weak, and she sank into the sofa.
Shen Du immediately covered her, his gaze shimmering like precious jewels. He showered her with kisses—softly on her forehead, gradually moving downwards, his lips brushing over her eyelashes and the tip of her nose, before finally returning to her lips.
Yao Nian sensed his warmth enveloping her; her legs stiffened momentarily. He paused, propping himself up on the sofa as he prepared to rise.
But the girl reached out and hooked her fingers around the back of his neck. Her voice trembled yet remained resolute.
I am willing.
