Yao Nian followed the prepared ritual, taking the pomelo leaves she had set aside and sweeping them up and down over his entire body.
Yao Zhandong frowned. "What are you doing?"
"This is to ward off bad luck! First, we're going to get a haircut, then after your shower, you'll change into clean clothes," she reminded him. "And from now on, you must walk straight ahead without looking back."
"You're still in college, and you're this superstitious? Where did you learn all this?" Yao Zhandong scoffed.
Yao Nian shot him a glare.
"Alright, alright, I’ll do as you say."
As he walked along, Yao Zhandong suddenly chuckled. "See? Having a daughter is great."
After completing the entire process, instead of heading straight home, Yao Zhandong asked Yao Nian to accompany him to eat at Li's Ramen, which he had been craving for a long time while in detention.
He grabbed a handful of green onions and tossed them into his bowl, then asked the owner for two extra pork chops.
"This is the taste!" Yao Zhandong slurped up a big mouthful of noodles. "I was starving!"
Yao Nian watched him eat with amusement but felt a twinge of sympathy. "Slow down; no one’s competing with you."
"You don’t understand; eating in detention is like going to war. You have to finish quickly," he replied.
In just a few moments, Yao Zhandong polished off the bowl of noodles and wiped his mouth contentedly with the napkin Yao Nian handed him.
After letting out a satisfied burp, he slowly spoke up. "Thanks to my dad getting out this time, I really owe it to Shen Du. I need to find a chance to thank him properly."
Yao Nian raised her eyebrows. "Did you go find him?"
"Not exactly," she said thoughtfully. "He heard about your situation and offered to help."
Yao Zhandong sighed. "After this incident, I've realized that friends are not really friends; when trouble strikes, they’re quick to distance themselves."
Yao Nian voiced her confusion. "Wasn't that piece of land not approved yet? How could it be sold so quickly?"
"Oh?" Yao Zhandong laughed. "You seem to know quite a bit about it."
"Isn't that why I said it was thanks to Shen Du? That piece of land had no issues from the start; it was my fault for not recognizing the right people and getting tricked. Shen Du had someone help him find some connections and made several trips just to get the approval process sorted out."
"The rest is obvious; once the land was sold and compensation was actively pursued, plus the fact that there were doubts about the evidence in your case, the prosecutor decided not to file charges against you."
"And what about the house?" Yao Nian asked again. "Wasn't it said to be sealed?"
This is truly the most precious thing.
Yao Zhandong's expression was thoughtful. The money from selling the land still fell short, and all our other properties were mortgaged. If we couldn't pay it back, we wouldn't meet the refund standards. I thought the money I had set aside for you would be enough, so I asked Shen Du to help sell our villa, at least to settle our debts first.
Yao Nian's breath caught in her throat as she listened to him continue: "In the end, I only found out after coming out that he hadn’t sold it at all. He actually took out his own money to fill the remaining gap. Sigh, how am I supposed to repay such a huge favor?"
She opened her mouth but couldn't make a sound.
Shen Du knew she had money and that she owned two more properties, yet he never even mentioned it to her.
After tidying up briefly, Yao Zhandong said he wanted to visit their grandparents to check in and asked if she wanted to go along.
Yao Nian naturally refused. It wasn't that she had anything against the elderly couple; it was just that everyone would surely know about Yao Zhandong's situation and would flock there. She didn't want to see those relatives.
Once he left, Yao Nian couldn't wait to call Shen Du, but then suddenly remembered he was still in court at this hour. She pressed the hang-up button and fell into a long contemplation.
As dinner time approached, Yao Nian thought that Yao Zhandong would definitely stay at their grandparents' for dinner. She was too lazy to go out and picked up her phone to order takeout instead.
Just then, a video call from Shen Du popped up.
She straightened up immediately.
