The man's handsome face filled the screen, the background revealing the inside of a car.
"Did you call me?" Shen Du asked with a smile.
Yao Nian aimed her phone at herself and muttered, "Yeah, why are you on video?"
"It's been a while since I last saw you. I wanted to check in," Shen Du replied.
"I just got back yesterday."
"Still, I wanted to see you." Shen Du adjusted his seat slightly, noticing that the girl looked a bit off. "Why do you look so down? Did you have a fight with President Yao?"
"No," Yao Nian sighed, speaking slowly. "Why didn't you tell me about such a big deal?"
Shen Du paused for a moment before quickly realizing what she meant.
"It's not that big of a deal. What's important is that your father can come out."
Yao Nian frowned. "Why didn't you listen to him and just sell the villa? I have money on hand; he wouldn't be homeless once he gets out."
Shen Du could tell she was feeling burdened and spoke softly, "Don't overthink it. Most of the compensation comes from selling the land; the part I'm covering isn't much. Besides—" He paused for two seconds, looking at the girl on the video with gentle eyes. "This is where you grew up. I'm afraid you'll have a hard time letting go."
Yao Nian's eyes warmed, and she was about to speak when she heard the sound of the doorknob turning at the entrance. The next second, Yao Zhandong walked in.
She quickly turned her phone away and slapped it onto the sofa. "What are you doing back here?!"
Yao Zhandong took off his shoes, looking confused. "I'm back to have dinner with you."
Yao Nian exclaimed, "Aren't you eating at Grandpa's house?"
"It's annoying; I didn't want to listen to your aunt and her chatter." He glanced at her suspiciously. "What are you up to?"
Without answering, Yao Nian slipped on her slippers and dashed up the stairs, saying, "I need to use the bathroom."
Once she closed the bathroom door, she hurriedly grabbed her phone, her heart racing as she patted her chest. "That scared me! I almost got caught!"
Shen Du chuckled softly, sensing from Yao Nian's tone that she seemed to be doing okay.
He had been feeling quite relaxed himself and was even thinking about how to repay her kindness when Yao Nian heard footsteps coming up the stairs and whispered, "He's coming up; I have to hang up now."
"Okay."
After hanging up the video call, Shen Du couldn't help but chuckle at the startled expression of the young girl from earlier.
As Yao Nian stepped out of the bathroom, she ran into Yao Zhandong, who was coming up the stairs.
Feeling a bit guilty, she averted her gaze. "What do you want to eat? I can order takeout."
Yao Zhandong stared at her for a long moment before slowly asking, "Are you in a relationship?"
Yao Nian was taken aback. After not seeing him for over half a year, when had her father developed such keen observational skills?
Seeing her reaction, Yao Zhandong felt even more certain.
He suddenly burst into laughter. "Come on, you're in college now. Why hide your relationship from me?"
Since he had already figured it out, Yao Nian decided to stop hiding it and shrugged her shoulders. "Yeah, I am."
"Who is it? Is it that guy who helped you move in at the start of the semester? I had my doubts about him from the beginning."
"No, no, no," Yao Nian interrupted impatiently. "I'm starving! Can you please just think about what to eat first?"
