As soon as she stepped off the platform, Yao Nian spotted the man waiting outside the exit gate. She paused for a moment, instinctively touching her face.
At this hour, there weren't many people exiting, and Shen Du quickly scanned the crowd for the girl's figure. The moment his gaze landed on her face, he immediately frowned.
Their eyes met, and Yao Nian could only brace herself and approach him, lowering her head to sidestep him. "Why are you here?"
Shen Du turned her to face him, staring intently at her face. His voice dropped ominously, "Who hit you?"
Yao Nian felt a twinge of regret; had she known he would come, she would have definitely layered on three coats of foundation before stepping out. She forced a smile and said, "Oh, don’t be so dramatic. It just looks red; it doesn’t hurt that much."
Shen Du pressed his lips together. "So Yao Zong knows about this now?"
Well, he would find out sooner or later. Yao Nian shrugged nonchalantly.
He gently touched her cheek, where the palm print left a faint red mark that was raised on her skin. If one looked closely, they could still see the faint lines of fingers etched into it.
Yao Nian instinctively flinched away, deepening Shen Du's frown. "Didn’t I tell you to wait for me to talk to him?"
"My mom told him," she replied. "But with his stubborn temper, it wouldn’t matter who he talked to; he’d just end up taking his anger out on you." Yao Nian took his hand and started walking outside. "I wouldn’t want him to be mean to you."
Shen Du felt a tightness in his chest as he grasped her hand firmly and pulled her into an embrace. Since things had escalated to violence, one could only imagine how furious Yao Zhan Dong must be. This silly girl was trying to protect him in her own way.
Yao Nian patted his back soothingly, like one would comfort a child. "It really doesn’t hurt that much; my dad knows how to hold back. If he really wanted to hit hard, I’d probably end up with a concussion."
"Stop talking nonsense," Shen Du scolded.
"I'm hungry," Yao Nian whined playfully while shaking his arm. "Can you take me out for barbecue?"
Shen Du sighed helplessly as he grabbed the bag slung over her shoulder and led her toward the parking lot.
How could he not see through her facade? The girl was deliberately putting on a brave face just to ease his worries.
After dinner, Shen Du drove straight back to his apartment.
Yao Nian was taken aback. "Aren't you going to take me back to school?"
"You don’t have classes for the next two days," Shen Du replied as he entered the underground garage. "Besides, exams are coming up soon; you need to rest and recuperate."
Thinking about it made Yao Nian feel a bit of a headache. "But I need to review! I have to get to the library early to secure a seat; if I’m late, there won’t be any spots left."
"Why is my girl like this?"
Yao Nian cast a sidelong glance at him, feeling as if he were mocking her.
Shen Du chuckled, "How could I dare to do that?"
She opened the car door and stepped out, unable to suppress her complaints. "No matter how exhausting the college entrance exam was, it was just about filling in the gaps. But now, with finals, it feels like I'm trying to patch up the sky like Nuwa! I really don’t understand why I chose to study law. Civil law and criminal law are a mixed bag, plus constitutional law on top of that—there's just too much to memorize, it's impossible!"
Shen Du pressed the elevator button and raised an eyebrow. "You could always cheat."
"Cheat? What do you mean?"
He playfully tapped her nose with his index finger. "Aren't I your cheat?"
"You’re going to take the exam for me?" Yao Nian replied with a hint of melancholy in her voice. "That would be illegal."
Sometimes Shen Du couldn't help but admire her wildly divergent thought process.
"What are you thinking? Just come to the law firm with me. You can review in the office while I help you out a bit. High scores aside, passing should be no problem."
Yao Nian's eyes lit up as she smiled at him. "Does this mean I'm getting an advantage by being close to you?"
"Not really," Shen Du said, his lips curving into a gentle smile, his expression tender. "The moon was always yours."
