"You take a look at the book first; I’ll be in a meeting for about an hour. I’ll help you with some sketches afterward," said Yao Nian as she spun around in her office chair and waved her hand. "Go ahead, Lawyer Shen."
Shen Du leaned down and gave her a quick kiss before grabbing the documents and leaving the office.
Yao Nian didn’t immediately dive into her review; instead, she curiously examined his desk. There were several thick folders stacked on the surface, and in the center lay a book with a green cover, titled "Comprehensive Legal Text on Construction Contracts." The pages were slightly yellowed, and there were numerous handwritten annotations beside it, indicating that he had flipped through it multiple times.
She casually picked up the book and immediately noticed a photo frame that was partially obscured.
Yao Nian paused for a moment. Inside the frame was the graduation photo she had given to Shen Du.
Her fingers traced the outline of the man in the frame, and a smile slowly spread across her face.
Perhaps it was because she had woken up too early or maybe the soundproofing in Shen Du's office was exceptionally good; once the door and windows were closed, she could hardly hear any noise. After working through just two case analyses, Yao Nian began to feel drowsy.
Thinking that this method of studying was too inefficient, she leaned back against her chair, covered her face with the book, and decided to take a short nap.
As soon as she closed her eyes, she slipped into deep sleep. It wasn’t until there was a knock on the door that she jolted awake.
The book fell from her face with a thud onto the carpet as Yao Nian stood up to open the door.
"Brother, the judgment for Feng Wanqiu has come down," said the boy standing at the door, his pupils flickering as his words caught in his throat.
Yao Nian smiled. "Are you looking for Shen Du? He’s still in a meeting."
Hearing her call out his name, Xiao Lu was even more shocked. He opened his mouth to speak but hesitated. "The meeting just ended."
"Oh, then he should be here soon. Why don’t you come in and wait?" Yao Nian suggested.
"No, no, no," Xiao Lu quickly waved his hands. "I’ll come back later."
Just as he turned to leave, Shen Du happened to walk over. He glanced at Yao Nian standing by the door and asked, "What’s going on?"
Xiao Lu cleared his throat. "Well, Feng Wanqiu's first-instance judgment has come down; it's pretty much what Ji Lu had estimated before. I just wanted to ask if we should appeal."
Shen Du took the folder from Xiao Lu's hands and glanced through it briefly. "The chances of maintaining the original ruling are high. You should communicate with the client and contact the court to expedite the case."
"Got it," Xiao Lu replied. Before leaving, he couldn’t help but steal a glance at Yao Nian, who was sipping water.
Shen Du glanced at him and spoke softly, "Sister-in-law."
Xiao Lu's face filled with shock as he clutched the folder in his hands and fled in a hurry.
Yao Nian choked on a sip of water, looking at him in disbelief. "What?"
Shen Du leisurely closed the door, raising an eyebrow. "This kid likes to call me brother; what's wrong with you calling her sister-in-law?"
Yao Nian fell silent, pondering the weight of such a title.
Shen Du picked up the business law textbook that had fallen under the chair and flipped through a couple of pages. The girl's handwriting was neat, but it was clear she hadn't done many exercises.
"Did you only write two?"
Yao Nian rubbed her nose. "I just fell asleep."
Shen Du shook his head helplessly, picking up the pen from the table and settling onto the sofa. "The business law exam isn't too deep; similar cases don't need to be done. Just finish the ones I've circled for now."
In the quiet office, the only sound was the soft scratching of the pen against the pages. Yao Nian sat beside Shen Du, resting her chin on her hand, quietly watching him.
She leaned in to take a closer look at the content; he had almost annotated each case with the corresponding legal articles, even specifying which clause it referred to.
Her gaze shifted to his face; he appeared focused and serious, the gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose completely obscured his eyes. The collar of his shirt had somehow come undone at one button, making his slightly protruding Adam's apple look particularly alluring.
Yao Nian felt her heart race, gently tugging at Shen Du's sleeve. "I'm so bored."
"Almost done," he replied, continuing to flip through the pages, completely oblivious to the mischievous glint in her eyes.
