After dinner, with plenty of time left, Shen Du took Yao Nian to a nearby mall, planning to buy the little girl some new clothes.
On the escalator, Yao Nian sipped from her oversized cup of taro bubble tea and excitedly asked, "What made you suddenly decide to go out and have fun?"
Shen Du held her hand, "Don't you want to go?"
"Of course I do! But can you get away? I heard Lawyer Jiang say that the firm has been swamped with cases lately."
"You really worry too much," Shen Du chuckled, ruffling her hair. "Did you forget? Someone's birthday is coming up."
Yao Nian counted the days and gasped, feeling exhausted from studying for exams. "I actually forgot!"
"Don't worry, I remember. Zhe Yuan is coming too; he's taking you out to relax."
Since they were heading to an island, Yao Nian tried on several dresses in the store but wasn't satisfied with any of them. Standing in front of the mirror, she fell into a dilemma over her choices.
"What about this one?"
Shen Du examined it seriously. "Hmm, it looks good."
"Isn't it too flashy?"
"Not at all."
"And what about this one?"
"That one looks good too."
Yao Nian was annoyed. "Can't you give me some constructive feedback?"
Shen Du feigned innocence. The girl had a well-proportioned figure and was tall and slender; he genuinely thought she looked good in anything, not just saying that to brush her off.
Realizing they were running out of time before the mall closed, Shen Du decisively bought all the dresses she had tried on, insisting she stop overthinking it.
Yao Nian teased him with a smile, "You're acting quite like a domineering CEO." She put her hands on her hips and said in a mock-serious tone, "Come on, take down all the dresses from that wall for me!"
Shen Du just laughed. Compared to her antics, he was much more efficient; he quickly picked out a few short-sleeved shirts and beach shorts. If it weren't for Yao Nian insisting he try on a couple more outfits, he felt he could have finished in under ten minutes.
They set their departure time for the day before Yao Nian's birthday.
As the clock approached midnight, Shen Du leaned back in his chair with a book in hand and let out a heavy yawn.
Yao Nian had already made countless trips between the living room and the bedroom, first carrying a pile of bottles and jars out, then returning to gather more items, muttering to herself all the while.
"I need to bring a few extra bottles of sunscreen; the sun over there is bound to be intense. A curling iron, a straightener... oh right, I need to pack some repairing face masks, and also—"
Shen Du could no longer hold back. He closed his book and walked into the living room, finding Yao Nian squatting in front of her suitcase, lost in thought.
"Are you not planning to sleep yet?"
She bit her finger and murmured, "Do you think I should bring a portable kettle?"
"We're not going into the wilderness to survive."
Suddenly, Yao Nian smacked her knee. "Oh no! I forgot to buy a swimsuit!"
Without hesitation, Shen Du scooped her up and carried her toward the bedroom.
"Hey! I haven't finished packing yet!" Yao Nian protested, glaring at him.
"Just bring yourself and your passport; you can buy everything else when we get there. Now go to sleep."
Yao Nian was quite displeased as he pressed her onto the bed. "If you're tired, just sleep! Why do you have to wait for me?"
Shen Du adjusted his position and wrapped his arms around her, his voice laced with fatigue. "I can't sleep without holding you."
Mo Ban Island wasn't too far away; the flight took less than three hours. To ensure Yao Nian would be comfortable, Shen Du had booked first-class tickets.
