Yao Nian jumped off the lounge chair, tiptoed, and leaped into the swimming pool. A momentary panic flashed across Shen Du's face as he instinctively reached out to grab her, only to be surprised to see the girl swimming with perfect form, her legs moving gracefully like a fish's tail.
Yao Nian propped herself up on the edge of the pool, emerging from the water with droplets glistening on her face. With a playful smile, she looked at him and said, "Have I told you that I once won second place in the district youth swimming competition?"
Shen Du crouched by the edge, chuckling in realization. "How long ago was that?"
"Fifth grade," she replied proudly. "It's the highest honor I've received so far."
"Then I might have underestimated you a bit."
"Not at all," she said, extending her arms with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Pull me up!"
Before Shen Du could react, it was too late. He was caught off guard as she yanked him in, and they both fell into the water together.
Countless splashes erupted around them as Yao Nian reveled in her successful prank. Suddenly, she felt a tightening around her waist. A stream of bubbles rose to the surface along with frantic gasps for air as her lips were abruptly sealed.
Caught off guard, Yao Nian swallowed a mouthful of water. Shen Du's hand on her waist began to wander downward, and the water swirled around their fingers. She felt lightheaded from lack of oxygen, nearly gasping for breath.
Shen Du lifted her legs to bring her above the surface. She opened her mouth wide to take a deep breath just as he caught her hand against his chest. The current pulled them under again, his hand sliding down from her abdomen and exploring further.
Yao Nian glanced around in panic. "You can't do this out here!"
Shen Du raised an eyebrow. "Am I wrong?"
The more he teased her, the more she wanted to defy him. She blinked innocently. "I'm not wrong."
Before she could process what was happening, Shen Du pulled her out of the water.
Water dripped from their bodies as they made their way along the edge of the pool and down the corridor until it disappeared at the door of the room. The bright blue sky was gradually swallowed by nightfall, and the last traces of sunset over the distant sea quietly faded away.
Even without sunlight, the mint green surface of the pool still stood out vividly against the starry night sky.
The next morning, Shen Du was awakened by the sound of crashing waves.
He ordered breakfast, and when he finished washing up and came out, the little girl was still in the same position, sprawled on the bed with most of her face buried in the pillow, sleeping soundly. The sound of the waves outside seemed to have no effect on her.
Shen Du walked to the bedside and leaned down to kiss her ear. "Time to get up."
Yao Nian frowned and mumbled, "Let me sleep a little longer."
After saying that, she hooked her leg around his waist, turned over, and continued to sleep. The nightgown she wore brushed against her thighs, revealing several ambiguous red marks.
Shen Du murmured to himself, "Seems like we had a bit too much fun last night."
He glanced at the time and continued to coax her gently, "Come on, get up and have breakfast. A boat will come to take us to town soon."
Yao Nian sleepily opened her eyes, clinging to Shen Du like a sloth. "You have to hold me for me to get up."
Shen Du chuckled softly, took hold of her arm, and lifted her as if she were a child, carrying her into the bathroom to wash up.
The hotel prepared a lavish breakfast: teriyaki salmon, kimchi fried rice, toast, seafood porridge, and waffles. It all looked quite exquisite, though the flavors were rather average.
