After the day passed, Yao Nian and Shen Du returned to Huaibei after a week of vacation. Shen Du had initially planned to stay a couple more days in Huaibei, but as soon as they landed, he received a call from Ji Zheyuan.
Yao Zhandong seemed to have changed his ways; during the day he was at the company, and at night, as long as there were no social engagements, he would have dinner at home with Yao Nian. Aunt Ke was also invited back by him. Yao Nian had intended to stay for a while before finding an excuse to go to Shanghai, but in the end, she quietly stayed at home for two months.
As summer drew to a close, several rains swept away the last traces of heat from the vacation.
Two days before school started, Shen Du arrived as promised to pick up the young lady and brought along some news.
That is, Song Xiaolin was pregnant.
"Really?" Yao Nian's interest piqued. "I need to buy some little clothes for the baby to give her."
"What's the rush?" Shen Du turned the plate with a smile. "It's not even two months yet; we don't know if it's a boy or a girl."
"That doesn't matter; let's buy it first!"
Yao Nian's eyes twinkled as she tilted her head and asked Shen Du, "Brother Zheyuan already has a baby; aren't you a bit envious?"
Shen Du glanced at her and replied nonchalantly, "What’s there to be envious of? I already have one."
"Huh?" She squinted her eyes.
Shen Du chuckled and raised his chin slightly. "Isn't one sitting right here?"
Yao Nian exclaimed in surprise, muttering under her breath, "You're getting more and more improper these days."
Knowing what she was thinking, Shen Du pinched her earlobe playfully. "I promised President Yao that I would at least wait until you graduate from university."
Yao Nian raised an eyebrow. "By then you'll be thirty-five!"
"Exactly, so you can't abandon me."
Yao Nian smiled brightly and leaned over to give him a kiss. "I wouldn't dream of it."
On October 1st, taking advantage of the seven-day National Day holiday, Xu Jiayi came to Shanghai to visit Yao Nian.
Before heading out, Shen Du handed her the car keys and said it would be hard to get a taxi during the holiday, so she should drive to the airport.
Since getting her driver's license, Shen Du had taken Yao Nian out for practice a few times; however, he had always been there beside her during those drives. She had never driven alone by herself.
Yao Nian gave him a heads-up beforehand. "My skills are limited; if I scratch your car, you can't blame me."
Shen Du found it amusing. "If you scratch it, then just consider it your tuition fee."
Despite her words, after dropping Shen Du off at the law firm, Yao Nian drove to the airport with her heart racing, barely keeping to the speed limit. Following the signs, she quickly found the terminal exit and spotted Xu Jiayi sitting on a stone bench, looking utterly dejected with a large bag slung over her shoulder.
She honked the horn, rolled down the window, and called out urgently, "Hurry up and get in! We can't stop here!"
Xu Jiayi climbed into the car, radiating an aura of frustration that could fuel ten vengeful sword immortals. "Sister, do you have any idea how long I've been waiting for you? If I had known you were going to drive this slowly, I might as well have taken a taxi myself!"
"I'm sorry! I'm still a beginner driver; cut me some slack," Yao Nian replied defensively.
Xu Jiayi tossed her bag into the back seat and began inspecting the interior. "Wow, such an expensive car! Does your Uncle Shen really let you, a novice driver, take it out?"
"Hey, my driving skills aren't that bad!" Yao Nian protested as she signaled to change lanes—though she was indeed slow.
Before she could finish her sentence, a taxi suddenly swerved in front of them. She slammed on the brakes, and both women lurched forward before being thrown back into their seats by inertia.
Xu Jiayi patted her chest to calm herself, staring at Yao Nian in shock.
On the road, Shen Du called to say he had reserved a table at Lao Gan Bei and asked them to head over first; he would join them once he finished up at the law firm.
