Two days before their departure, Shen Du made a special trip back to his parents' home to inform them that he had a girlfriend. He mentioned that he would bring her to meet them on the day of the old lady's birthday celebration.
Upon hearing this news, Shen's mother was overjoyed and immediately began to inquire about the girl—where she was from, where she worked, and how old she was.
Shen Du had prepared himself for this moment. "Her name is Yao Nian, and she's still studying at Huada."
"Studying?" Shen's mother paused for a moment. "Is she in graduate school or pursuing a doctorate?"
Shen Du cleared his throat. "She's in her second year of college."
Shen's parents exchanged glances.
Shen's father set down his teacup heavily. "You really are becoming more reckless!"
Shen Chonghe had been retired for many years, but the habits from his time in the officialdom had not completely faded. His thinking, while not entirely rigid, was relatively fixed, making it difficult for him to understand a relationship with such an age gap.
Shen's mother wiped the smile from her face, her expression turning serious. "Isn't she just over twenty?"
"Yes, she is a bit young," Shen Du admitted, "but she's quite mature for her age."
At that moment, Shen's mother felt a mix of emotions—half joy and half worry. The joy came from the fact that her son had finally found a girlfriend and was willing to bring her home, which indicated he was serious about marriage. The worry stemmed from the uncertainty of a girl at such a young age; who knew if their relationship would last? What if she turned out to be someone who enjoyed playing games with feelings? Wouldn’t that waste her son's time?
Shen Du understood their concerns but didn’t elaborate too much. No amount of reassurance could compare to them meeting Yao Nian in person.
Meanwhile, Yao Nian was feeling anxious as she prepared to leave for Rongcheng. On the day of their departure, she arrived at her peak of nervousness.
Lin Mo looked at Yao Nian’s sky-blue Chinese-style coat with an expression that said it all. She pointed out bluntly, "Even if you dress like that, it won't change the fact that you're twelve years younger than Lawyer Shen."
"What?" Yao Nian turned around in front of the mirror. "I bought this coat yesterday at Ziyuan Pavilion. I thought it looked quite mature."
Lin Mo couldn't help but tease her further. "If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were wearing your mom’s clothes."
Yao Nian took off the coat and sighed dramatically. "What should I do now? It’s too late to buy new clothes!"
Lin Mo chuckled. "Why do you have to dress so old-fashioned? Just wear what you usually wear."
Yao Nian stood in front of her wardrobe for a full ten minutes before finally taking Lin Mo’s suggestion and choosing an oatmeal-colored cashmere sweater paired with beige wide-leg pants, creating a soft and gentle look.
At three in the afternoon, Shen Du arrived at Huada right on time.
The moment the girl appeared at the school gate, he found himself momentarily stunned.
The young girl had clearly put a lot of effort into her appearance, her style differing from her usual self. The gentle colors softened her bright features, adding a touch of mature elegance to her demeanor.
She jogged lightly up to Shen Du, slightly anxious as she asked, "How do I look?"
Shen Du propped his chin on his hand and studied her for a moment.
Noticing his silence, Yao Nian's heart raced. Was it not good enough?
"You look great," Shen Du said, casually tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "But you don’t need to please anyone; dress however you like."
Yao Nian pouted and placed the camphor wood box in the back seat before getting into the passenger side.
Shen Du glanced back at her. "What’s that?"
"It's a birthday gift for my grandmother."
"I thought you said you were all set?"
"That was your preparation, not mine," she replied, adjusting her hair in the mirror after flipping down the sun visor.
