During dinner, Father Shen tapped on the table, his voice filled with chatter.
Shen Yi quickly tried to change the subject. "Xiao Nian, eat more. If you like the stuffed pancakes, I'll have Xiao Du pack some for you to take home tonight."
"Thank you, Uncle," Yao Nian replied with a smile.
Seeing that she didn’t show any displeasure, Shen Yi let out a subtle sigh of relief, only to shoot a glare at Xu Zhengnan, silently telling him to mind his own business.
After the meal, Shen Du and Xu Zhengnan began clearing the dishes as usual. Just as Yao Nian picked up her bowl, Shen Yi poured her some tea and gestured for her to come over. "Xiao Nian, you can leave the washing to them."
Shen Du wiped his oily fingers clean for her and said, "Go sit on the sofa for a bit and chat with my mom."
Xu Zhengnan teased, "Big Brother, I didn’t know you could be so considerate!"
Shen Du chuckled and gave him a light pat on the shoulder.
At that moment, the elderly lady was in her room taking medicine, while Father Shen was in the backyard tending to his small vegetable patch. The living room was left with just the two of them.
Throughout the evening, Shen Yi had observed that although Yao Nian was young, she spoke clearly and carried herself with grace—completely devoid of any small-mindedness. This was quite different from what he had imagined.
Seizing the rare opportunity to speak privately, Shen Yi hesitated for a moment before voicing his concerns. "Xiao Nian, I know it might be a bit early to discuss this now," he sighed. "You also know how old Xiao Du is; I’m worried too."
"I understand," Yao Nian quickly replied.
"When he told me about this, although I was happy for him and his father, I still had some reservations. After all, you’re quite young, and there are uncertainties ahead. I can sense how much he cares about you."
Yao Nian vaguely understood what he wanted to ask—it was likely about the pressure Shen Du had been feeling.
Shen Yi paused for a moment before looking at her. "I want to ask if you’ve thought about when you might settle down?"
Yao Nian smiled shyly. "Uncle, to be honest with you, since the day I got together with him, I haven’t thought about marrying anyone else."
Shen Yi was slightly taken aback. "I thought nowadays young women wouldn’t want to marry so early."
She touched the cool sensation on her wrist and smiled softly. "So I feel very lucky to have met someone like Xiao Du at this age."
Her simple words were enough to reassure Shen Yi.
As they parted ways, besides the jade bracelet she received, Yao Nian also received two heavy red envelopes.
On their way home, Shen Du watched as the young girl happily held onto her red envelopes and couldn’t help but chuckle. "How come I never noticed you were so money-minded before?"
"This isn’t about money," Yao Nian said proudly. "It’s about Uncle and Auntie recognizing me."
After the meal, Yao Nian felt a bit dizzy, as if she had suddenly drawn closer to his life, carrying some kind of mission.
Shen Du glanced at her and asked with a smile, "Don't you feel any pressure?"
"A little," Yao Nian met his gaze, her expression serious. "So, I will treat you better from now on. I can take care of you, and I can be your support. I will make sure they feel at ease."
The corners of the young girl's eyes curved slightly, and in Shen Du's gaze, there was a pure and brilliant light.
The vehicle pulled over to the side of the road, its hazard lights flashing.
Stars filled the transparent sunroof, descending heavily like countless points of light, as if they were illuminating the entire world.
And this kiss was witnessed only by the vast expanse of stars above.
