No wonder. Previously, a male colleague from the marketing department had asked Yao Nian out for dinner several times, but she had refused him repeatedly. Yet he persisted, asking her every day. After Xie Boyu caught them, he sent the guy away.
The next day, Shen Du made such a big fuss that everyone in the company knew she had a boyfriend after that.
Yao Nian rested her elbow on her chin, observing the man who was focused on driving. "I’ve noticed you’ve become increasingly petty lately."
Shen Du raised an eyebrow. "You just realized?"
They went to Lingniao Market and picked out eight Lan Shou fish. The owner mentioned that these fish were quite precious; they could eat and excrete well, but without a filtration box, they would turn yellow in no time.
Yao Nian sighed as she looked at the big fat fish head. "The equipment is fine; I just don’t know if Shu Jie has fed them. Those few that Xie Zong had were literally overfed to death."
After Shen Du instructed the owner to deliver them to the company tomorrow and paid, he asked, "Who is Shu Jie?"
"Oh, she’s the girl who just invited you to dinner."
Thinking of her expression earlier, Shen Du curiously asked, "What’s your relationship like?"
"Not bad. We’re both interns in the same team, so we interact quite a bit."
Shen Du nodded thoughtfully.
When they returned to the apartment, Shen Du took a shower and lay down on the bed, noticing Yao Nian setting an alarm for an early rise the next day.
"Six-thirty? Why are you getting up so early?"
Yao Nian lifted his arm and nestled into his embrace. "I’ve been timing my commute to the company these past few days. I almost overslept today; waking up early means I won’t have to rush."
Xie Boyu's company was great in many ways—the atmosphere was nice, and the work was easy—but the only downside was how far it was from their apartment.
Yao Nian's commute felt like a triathlon; when there were no urgent matters at the law firm, Shen Du would drive her. However, Yao Nian felt that making him go back and forth wasted too much of his time, so she eventually insisted he stop driving her.
Shen Du gently played with her earlobe and suggested, "I’ve told you several times to drive yourself; you could sleep in a bit longer in the morning."
"I wouldn’t want that! If I drove your car over there, people would think I’m the boss!"
Shen Du was taken aback; he never imagined one day his car would be looked down upon.
Though the young woman wasn’t pretentious, Shen Du still felt a pang of sympathy and proposed a reasonable suggestion. "How about we go look at some cars this weekend?"
"Why? Are you going to buy me a car?" Yao Nian laughed.
"Well, sooner or later, I have to buy one. You should see if there’s a brand you like first."
She counted the days on her fingers. The internship lasted only two months, and buying a car didn’t seem worth it. Besides, my meager internship salary wouldn’t even cover the gas.
Shen Du glanced at her sideways, his tone not very pleased. "Am I just a decoration?"
Yao Nian giggled and gave him a quick kiss. "I know you care about me, but it’s too early to buy a car now. Besides, you can’t steal the spotlight from President Yao."
"Did President Yao mention it?"
"He said he’d buy me one after graduation. This is my last chance to rely on my parents; I have to cherish it."
Shen Du sighed and reached out to turn off the light. "Relying on your parents is not as good as relying on me."
In the darkness, he noticed that the little girl’s hand was getting a bit restless.
Shen Du cleared his throat and reminded her, "You only have six hours left to sleep."
Yao Nian’s eyes sparkled as she leaned closer to his ear. "So, should I sleep now?"
Shen Du didn’t respond.
"Really going to sleep?"
As she spoke, she tried to pull her hand back from resting on his abs.
In the next moment, her hand was caught and pulled back by him as he rolled over.
The night was silent, with only their lingering breaths filling the stillness.
