The next day, during the lunch break, Yao Nian and Cen Shujie finished their meal and stood in line at the Starbucks downstairs to buy coffee.
"Hey, Yao Nian," Cen Shujie asked casually, "What does your boyfriend do?"
"He's a lawyer."
Surprised, she responded, "Oh, which firm is he at?"
Yao Nian took the coffee from the barista and replied, "It's not a firm; he co-founded a law office with his partner."
Cen Shujie seemed puzzled. "Then why are you still interning here? It would be so convenient to go directly to his office."
"To avoid any conflicts of interest," Yao Nian smiled.
Curiously, Cen Shujie continued, "He looks much older than you. How did you two get together?"
Yao Nian wasn't comfortable discussing such personal matters with someone she didn't know well, so she just gave a few vague responses.
Over time, Cen Shujie frequently tried to pry information about Shen Du from Yao Nian. At first, Yao Nian didn't think much of it, but after several inquiries, she started to feel annoyed.
"Sister Shujie, what exactly do you want to know?"
Cen Shujie paused for a moment before quickly saying, "Please don't misunderstand. With the internship coming to an end soon, there's only one spot available in our office. I doubt I have a chance."
She affectionately linked her arm through Yao Nian's. "Could you ask your boyfriend if his firm is hiring right now?"
Yao Nian hesitated. "I rarely get involved in his firm's affairs."
"Oh come on! We're the closest here," she said while shaking Yao Nian's arm. "You know my hometown is in Yun City. It's not easy for me to stay in Shanghai. Please help me out!"
With a sigh, Yao Nian reluctantly replied, "I'll ask him, but if they're not hiring, there's nothing I can do."
Cen Shujie's face lit up with a smile. "No worries! I'm just glad you're willing to help!"
That Friday, Shen Du arrived early and waited downstairs for Yao Nian.
His grandmother had mentioned several times that she hadn't seen them in a while and wanted to take this weekend to visit her in Rong City with Yao Nian.
Yao Nian whispered into the phone while crouched under the table, "Are you already there? I'm in a meeting; I can't leave yet."
Cen Shujie's ears perked up; she knew how long she had been waiting for this opportunity.
She quietly glanced at the time and quickly found an excuse to slip out of the conference room.
Rushing downstairs, she spotted Shen Du's car parked diagonally across the street with its hazard lights flashing.
Cen Shujie slowed her pace, took a deep breath, and adjusted her disheveled hair before walking forward at a leisurely pace.
Gathering her courage, she tapped on the car window.
The window slowly rolled down, revealing the handsome face of the man before her.
Clearing her throat softly, she asked, "Lawyer Shen, are you waiting for Yao Nian?"
Shen Du nodded slightly, looking at her with an expression that was hard to read.
"The Ministry of Justice has called an impromptu meeting; she might not be down anytime soon."
"I understand."
Cen Shujie felt inexplicably nervous. After hesitating for a moment, she finally spoke up, "Can I have your contact information?"
Shen Du was momentarily taken aback, not expecting her to be so bold.
Seeing his silence, Cen Shujie thought there might still be hope and mustered her courage to continue, "I know you have a girlfriend, but I want to follow my heart. Ever since I met you last time, I've liked you. Could you...?"
"Can't." Shen Du interrupted her.
Cen Shujie's brow furrowed tightly as she bit her lip and explained, "I know this isn't appropriate; you're not married yet. I just want to fight for myself."
The man studied her for a moment before responding coolly, "We will get married."
"And I love her very much."
