Cen Shujie couldn't understand where she fell short compared to Yao Nian. In terms of education, she was no less qualified than Yao Nian, and as for looks, while she might not be the most stunning in the entire school, she was certainly among the top in their department.
There were plenty of suitors vying for Cen Shujie's attention at school, but her aspirations were high; she had no interest in those inexperienced boys. It wasn't until she met Shen Du that her standards were truly met. He perfectly embodied everything she envisioned in a future partner. Yet, he happened to have a girlfriend.
Cen Shujie bit her lip, staring at the closed car window, feeling a surge of frustration. She had worked hard to leave her small hometown in Nancheng and secure an internship opportunity in this city through her own efforts. Every step had been a battle fought fiercely by her own hands.
So why shouldn't she take the initiative to pursue someone she liked?
Whenever Yao Nian came over, the old lady would always have Xu Zhengnan buy ingredients ahead of time, unwaveringly preparing dumplings for her. As soon as Yao Nian stepped through the door, she washed her hands and eagerly rushed into the kitchen to help.
"Grandma, let me assist you!"
"You’ve been working all day; you must be exhausted," the old lady insisted, urging her to rest for a while. "I'll make the first one for you to taste later."
Shen Du leaned against the doorframe with a smile. "That's favoritism! I’ve been working all day too."
The old lady shot him a glare. "What kind of man are you to say such things? If you don’t work, how will you support your wife?"
"Yes, yes," Shen Du laughed. "I’ll make sure to raise her plump and healthy."
Yao Nian leaned closer to whisper in her ear, "Can you teach me how to make dumplings?"
"Why bother learning that? It’s too much trouble. Just come over when you want to eat; Grandma can make them anytime."
She glanced at Shen Du, who was busy on a phone call, ensuring he wasn’t paying attention before quietly saying, "Shen Du always says I’m a kitchen disaster. I want to learn so I can surprise him."
The old lady raised an eyebrow. "You really want to learn?"
"Yes!" Yao Nian nodded vigorously.
She fetched an empty stainless steel bowl and a bag of flour. "Let’s start with kneading the dough."
Yao Nian rolled up her sleeves and began pouring flour into the bowl while the old lady monitored the proportions. "Pour slowly and add some water."
She began to add water as instructed.
"Hey, that's too much! Add a bit more flour."
This back-and-forth continued until, during her third attempt to add flour, the stainless steel bowl precariously balanced on the countertop finally couldn't bear the weight and suddenly tilted over, crashing to the ground.
"Ouch!" The old lady instinctively reached out to help.
With a loud bang, the bowl hit the floor and a cloud of white flour erupted into the air.
Hearing the commotion, Shen Du hurried into the kitchen.
What he saw was a scene of chaos: the little girl was covered in white from head to toe, her hands still poised as if ready to catch the bowl. Her eyes were wide with shock, looking utterly helpless.
After a few seconds, Shen Du couldn't hold back any longer; laughter erupted from his chest and he struggled to regain his composure.
Just then, Xu Zhengnan walked in with little Rui Rui in his arms. He paused at the sight before him, taken aback by the disastrous scene.
Has our kitchen been blown up?
Yao Nian awkwardly extended her hand towards him. "Brother Zhengnan."
The old lady smacked Shen Du on the back. "What are you laughing at? Hurry up and clean this up!"
Yao Nian quickly crouched down to help, but she was stopped. "No, no! Let Shen Du take care of it; you go wash your face first."
Shen Du patted her flour-covered face and, suppressing his laughter, said, "Go wash up; I'll clean this up."
Little Rui Rui curiously approached Yao Nian, staring at her face. "Sister, white white! Rui Rui wants too!"
Yao Nian dabbed a bit of flour on his nose. "Now you're a little raccoon!"
Little Rui Rui danced around happily. "Bear! Bear!"
Shen Du picked up little Rui Rui and pointed at Yao Nian as she walked toward the bathroom. "It's Auntie."
Little Rui Rui huffed and turned his head away. "Sister!"
