He sighed helplessly, returning the little one to Xu Zhengnan. She seemed quite clever, yet why couldn't she change her ways?
Xu Zhengnan laughed, "How old is your little cousin? Why call her Auntie?"
As mealtime approached, Yao Nian's dumpling lesson was forced to an end, and she was sent off to play with Xiao Rui Rui. In the end, it was Shen Du who helped finish the dough and fry the dumplings with the old lady.
Yao Nian secretly resolved that next time, she would come over to learn in secret when Shen Du wasn't around.
After dinner, it was nearly eight o'clock. The old lady went to bed early, and they sat with her for a while before heading out to the city.
On the way, Yao Nian drove. As long as they weren't in a hurry, Shen Du would let her practice driving.
After hesitating for a while, he felt it was necessary to remind Yao Nian. "That intern you were with, what was her name? Cen something?"
"Are you talking about Shu Jie?"
"Yeah, you'll be seeing her often."
"What's wrong?"
Yao Nian suddenly remembered Cen Shu Jie's message and almost forgot; she had asked for help just yesterday.
"What kind of help?"
"Isn't she just graduated? She wants to stay in the city and asked me to find out if your law firm is hiring."
Shen Du smirked slightly; she really knew how to find connections.
Yao Nian glanced at him, "She pestered me for a long time; I couldn't refuse."
Shen Du shook his head helplessly; his girl truly had no sense of urgency.
"Just tell her you're not hiring."
Yao Nian frowned, "Why am I being foolish?"
Shen Du contemplated whether or not to tell her what Cen Shu Jie had said in the afternoon. However, he thought that since their internship was almost over, it would be better to wait until then to discuss it. After all, they would be seeing each other frequently; it would save the young girl from feeling awkward later on.
In mid-August, Yao Nian's internship officially came to an end. Xie Boyu waved his hand generously and organized a farewell gathering for the interns.
Before leaving work, he called Yao Nian into his office alone. As she entered, she instinctively glanced at the water dispenser.
Xie Boyu cleared his throat and, with thoughtfulness, mentioned that he had bought her two more bottles.
Yao Nian felt a bit embarrassed and lowered her head. "Mr. Xie..."
Now that the internship was over, should she still call him that? What should she call him instead?
Xie Boyu chuckled, "How do you address Shen Du?"
Yao Nian looked at him in silence for a moment before slowly uttering a word: "Uncle?"
Xie Boyu broke into a fit of coughing. "Alright, alright, cough cough, let's get serious."
He took a moment to catch his breath. "You have about a year left until graduation, right? After you graduate, have you considered coming to our department?"
Yao Nian was somewhat surprised; she didn't think her performance during the internship had been outstanding enough for Xie Boyu to consider bringing her on board early. She was aware of her own capabilities.
So she tentatively asked, "Did Shen Du put in a good word for me?"
Xie Boyu paused for a moment before laughing. "Not really. With such a large law firm, if anyone were to open doors for you, it wouldn't be me. I just think you're quite composed and serious about your work. Even without the connection to Shen Du, I admire you."
"Oh," Yao Nian replied, not entirely convinced but still being honest. "I haven't really thought it through yet, but if I decide to come after graduation, I would probably go through the formal recruitment process for an interview."
Xie Boyu sighed. "Looks like my little temple can't keep people."
