For more than three years with Shen Du, Yao Nian had rarely lost her temper, but at that moment, she was sulking on the sofa, hugging the plush toy she had brought back from the dormitory, a little duck named Keda.
“Why does it have to be you? Why can’t it be Brother Zheyuan?”
Shen Du placed a bowl of freshly washed cherries in front of her. “I can’t help it; I’ve been handling this case. I didn’t expect the court date to be moved up suddenly.”
Yao Nian understood his nature. If it weren’t for particularly important cases, Shen Du usually wouldn’t attend court personally. But thinking about how he wouldn’t be able to attend her graduation ceremony made her mood sink uncontrollably.
Shen Du pulled the Keda duck from her arms and lifted her onto his lap, gently coaxing her, “Don’t be upset. I’ll try to finish up quickly and come back. Maybe I can still make it.”
“Okay.”
Shen Du picked up a cherry and held it to her lips. “Try this; it’s really sweet.”
Yao Nian turned her head away in annoyance, refusing to eat.
He chuckled and playfully nibbled her chin, his warm lips brushing against her cheek before trailing to her ear, softly teasing her earlobe as if he were tickling her.
Yao Nian felt a tingle and couldn’t help but bite his lip in frustration.
Their noses brushed together as Shen Du seized the moment, gently entwining his tongue with hers while his hand tightened its grip at the back of her head.
His kisses traveled gradually from her neck down to her collarbone, and Yao Nian let out a soft whimper, gasping as she tried to pull away. “You just…”
Shen Du pressed her down further, his breath heavy with desire. “Not enough.”
They hadn’t turned off the lights this time; the warm orange glow filled the room, casting soft shadows that revealed their intertwined figures on the sofa.
The next morning, when Yao Nian was awakened by the alarm, Shen Du was already gone.
On the bedside table lay a note:
“Breakfast is in the thermos; remember to eat before school. Love you.”
Next to it was a drawing of a little girl with hands on her hips, looking angry.
Yao Nian pouted, suddenly realizing that her expression mirrored that of the girl in the drawing.
This person is really annoying yet lovable.
After finishing breakfast, Yao Nian drove her little pink car back to Huada University, preparing to meet Lin Mo and Fang Yiran at the venue.
As soon as she entered the room, the two of them had already changed into their graduation gowns and were taking selfies with their phones.
Seeing Yao Nian walk in, Fang Yiran excitedly pulled her over. "Come on, hurry up and change! Let’s take a few pictures together!"
Yao Nian smiled as she slipped into her gown, joining them for several photos. As they posed and laughed, she suddenly felt a wave of nostalgia wash over her as she looked at the three bright smiles in the camera.
She couldn’t help but recall the times after class when she, Lin Mo, and Fang Yiran would buy lunch at the cafeteria and then head back to their dorms to change into pajamas. They would eat while binge-watching dramas, often sharing their thoughts on the ridiculous plot twists together.
Or those afternoons after exams when the entire dorm would pull down the curtains and turn off the lights around six or seven o'clock. They would play on their phones late into the night, and occasionally, she would glance up to see Lin Mo's face illuminated by her screen across the room. In those moments, everything felt so reassuring.
Noticing Yao Nian's eyes glistening with unshed tears, Lin Mo took a deep breath. "No one is allowed to cry!"
Fang Yiran couldn’t hold back either and rubbed her eyes. "You two are at least staying in Shanghai; you can still see each other often. It’s me who’s going to miss you both!"
Yao Nian wrapped her arm around Fang Yiran's shoulder, her voice thick with emotion. "Then it’s settled! Lin Mo and I will come find you whenever we can, and you have to come back to visit us often."
"Definitely!" Fang Yiran replied with a nod.
Time really did feel like a swift creature with legs, racing by quickly. In those unremarkable days that passed by, they were truly about to graduate.
On their way to the venue, Yao Nian occasionally checked her phone for messages. Although she knew Shen Du was unlikely to make it—if he did arrive, the ceremony would probably be over—she still held onto a sliver of hope that at least she could get a graduation photo with him while wearing her gown.
The chat history still lingered from yesterday.
She sighed, turned off her screen, and tucked her phone back into her pocket.
Suddenly, a hurried embrace nearly knocked her off balance, and the familiar scent of rose perfume filled the air.
"Mom?" Yao Nian exclaimed in shock as she looked at her mother. "When did you come back?"
"How could I miss such an important day?" Qiao Shuzhen said with a beaming smile as she looked her daughter up and down. "My daughter looks stunning in anything!"
Before Yao Nian could respond, Yao Zhandong casually strolled up from behind her and remarked sarcastically, "Everyone's back home now; why are you still showing off your English?"
