Zhao Xinqing followed his gaze and was surprised to see a fair-skinned young man approaching.
With two small mustaches, he looked quite handsome, but there was a noticeable scent of powder about him that made Zhao feel a bit uncomfortable. However, dressed in a luxurious blue robe and sporting a striking jade ring on his hand, he resembled a delicate young master from a wealthy family.
"I've suspected it for a long time; you really do have a penchant for pretty boys. Just look at you, unable to take your eyes off that handsome fellow..." Zhao Xinqing shook his head and sighed after the man left, slowly shaking his head. "The world is going downhill..."
Shui Lingyun's eyes sparkled with excitement, gleaming with mischief. " Qing'er, look! There are actually quite a few perverts in this world. That guy is cross-dressing too!"
"What?" Zhao Xinqing exclaimed, her eyes widening in disbelief.
"Not only that, but I also found something quite interesting about her!" Shui Lingyun raised an eyebrow, her expression playful. "Er Gouzi, when did that gentleman leave just now?"
"Him? He left yesterday! He arrived right after the one with the surname Pei; one is staying in Room One, and the other in Room Two—right next to each other!"
"Then did he arrive before or after that short-lived Boss Pei?"
shopkeeper Wang behind the counter blurted out, "Of course it was Boss Pei! After Boss Pei entered the room, Er Gouzi went to serve him tea, and this guest just arrived."
Zhao Xinqing and Shui Lingyun exchanged glances. Suddenly, they pushed back their chairs and stood up simultaneously, the chairs scraping against the floor as they hurriedly rushed outside.
"Hey, Miss Zhao! You haven't paid yet!"
"We'll go find that rascal at the county office later!" Zhao Xinqing tossed this remark over her shoulder as she vanished out the door like a gust of wind, her footsteps swift as she hurried away.
As Zhao Xinqing returned to the county office, the sky had completely darkened.
"I thought you were angry, but you seem to be having a great time!" Qin Qixu sat by the small stone table outside her room, illuminated only by the faint glow of a lantern in the corridor, making it difficult to see his expression.
Shui Lingyun, with one hand resting heavily on Zhao Xinqing's shoulder, provocatively said, "Just look at who’s keeping her company; how could she not be happy? Right?"
Zhao Xinqing dismissed him with a wave and settled onto the stone bench, her weight slowly sinking down. "The prince and I found a clue, so..."
"I already have an idea about the case; you don’t need to waste your time!" Qin Qixu's voice was low, but Zhao Xinqing knew that he wouldn’t speak so confidently unless he had some assurance.
"So, do you think the murderer is Liu Yun?" Zhao Xinqing asked tentatively, her eyes fixed on Qin Qixu.
"It shouldn't be her. She's not that kind of person. From the wounds on the body, it seems the murderer was quite flustered at the time and didn’t control their strength well, which is why the knife went in so deep. Liu Yun doesn’t strike me as someone lacking courage."
"Are you praising her or suggesting that if she wanted to kill someone, she'd do it much more skillfully?" Zhao Xinqing asked sarcastically, a hint of mockery at the corner of her mouth.
Qin Qixu took her hand gently and held it. "I know you don't like her, but this incident should have nothing to do with her."
"So, you still don’t plan to tell me what your connection with her is?"
"I..." He furrowed his brow deeply and glanced at the oblivious figure stretching their neck behind her. "Hasn't the prince worked hard all day? Aren't you going to go back inside and rest properly?"
Shui Lingyun shamelessly sat down beside them and declared after plopping down, "Not tired at all! I spent the whole day with Qing'er; I feel refreshed and not a bit weary!"
Qin Qixu had no choice but to change the subject. "Today, Lao Fang and I were at Qi Xiang tower, and we questioned nearly everyone who was in the building last night. Since Liu Yun's current status is different from that of other young ladies, the matron specifically assigned two strong men to guard the front of Liu Yun's room, to prevent any drunken guests from bothering her. According to those two guards, last night, aside from someone with the surname Pei, there were only Liu Yun and her maid, Feng'er."
Shui Lingyun chuckled softly, a hint of amusement dancing at the corners of her mouth. "You've been observing that maid ever since you entered the room. If I’m not mistaken, it was your piercing gaze that frightened her so much when she went to fetch tea!"
"If she weren’t feeling guilty, she wouldn’t have any reason to be afraid of me!"
