Lin Li understood that to unravel the mystery of her sister's death, she had to delve deeply into her sister's relationships.
This was an era that appeared prosperous but was, in reality, filled with intricate interpersonal dynamics, where everyone was hustling for their own interests and desires.
She learned that Lu Chen was her sister's ex-boyfriend and the owner of the Hot Spring Hotel. Lin Li arrived at the hotel, where the lobby was bustling with people. Laughter and chatter filled the air as some conversed joyfully while others hurried along, but she had no mind to appreciate her surroundings.
Lu Chen received her in his lavishly decorated office. Dressed in a sharp suit, his hair meticulously styled, he wore an expression that seemed sorrowful, yet there was an elusive glint in his eyes that hinted at something deeper.
He began recounting his past with Lin Li's sister, his tone laced with accusations: "Your sister was too vain. She broke up with me for money and had some ambiguous relationship with her boss. Seeing her like this now, she might have committed suicide out of guilt."
As he spoke, he gently shook his head, wearing an expression of helplessness and "regret," as if he were an outsider objectively evaluating the situation.
Lin Li listened quietly, her heart filled with doubts, yet her face remained calm. She occasionally interjected with questions like, "What exactly happened when you broke up? Did my sister do anything strange with her boss that raised your suspicions?"
Whenever Lu Chen answered these questions, he would pause slightly, as if organizing his thoughts to make his statements more believable: "It was after a big fight that she said she wanted to break up. Later I found out she was getting close to her boss. I can't say for sure what strange behavior she exhibited; it just felt off."
Lin Li carefully observed every reaction of his, not letting any subtle change in expression slip by. She knew well that behind this seemingly reasonable narrative might lie a significant lie.
Next, Lin Li visited Su Qing. Su Qing's home was warm and cozy, with light blue curtains gently swaying in the breeze, but at that moment it was permeated by a sense of sorrow.
Su Qing's eyes were swollen like walnuts, her hair disheveled; she looked utterly lost.
Sitting on the sofa, she sobbed uncontrollably as she recounted the events of the night of the incident: "I was supposed to go find your sister, but something came up last minute and delayed me. By the time I got to the hotel, the door was locked from the inside. I couldn't push it open no matter how hard I tried. Eventually, I got a staff member to help me open it, and then I saw your sister... I was so shocked that all I could think about was calling the police."
Lin Li looked at Su Qing's sad expression, feeling a mix of pity and suspicion. On one hand, she felt sorry for her; on the other, she doubted her words.
She focused on Su Qing's face and movements, noticing that whenever Su Qing spoke about certain details, her gaze would unconsciously drift to the left. This was a classic sign of deception.
Lin Li maintained her composure and continued to question, "What exactly delayed you? What time did you arrive at the hotel? What did you do first when you saw my sister?"
Su Qing's response became hesitant; her hands twisted nervously at the hem of her shirt, as if trying to wring out her anxiety. "Well... there were unexpected guests at home. I got to the hotel around nine o'clock. When I saw your sister, I was stunned. I called out to her a few times, but when she didn't respond, I went to call the police."
Lin Li also noticed some small items related to Lu Chen on Su Qing's coffee table, such as a customized lighter and a keychain with the hotel logo. This made her suspect that there might be some special connection between Su Qing and Lu Chen, and whether this relationship had anything to do with her sister's death.
Determined to investigate further into the relationship between Su Qing and Lu Chen, Lin Li believed this could be a crucial breakthrough in uncovering the truth behind the case.
