Looking at the shop filled with adorable pets, Qiao Yuxiang always felt a wave of emotions wash over her, leaving her melancholic. When Yan Kehe saw her sitting alone on the sofa, silently shedding tears, his heart tightened. It was as if he were looking at a younger version of himself, lost and confused about life.
He pondered why he had chosen such a complicated way to keep Qiao Yuxiang by his side. Perhaps it was because she reminded him of his past self; he felt sympathy for her and couldn’t help but worry.
Yet deep within him, a certain feeling began to quietly spread. Before he could sort through these thoughts, he found himself sitting beside her without realizing it.
Qiao Yuxiang sensed his presence and quickly wiped away the tears that marred her face.
“Thinking of Yuan Yuan?” he asked gently.
“Yeah.” Her voice was thick with emotion, unable to hide the embarrassment of having cried.
“The lifespan of cats and dogs is only a few short years. They will leave you eventually. You must learn to face their death calmly; it is the law of nature.” His long fingers unconsciously brushed through her soft hair, offering a gentle touch to soothe her fragility.
She blinked back her tears but felt a flicker of anger rise within her. “How can you say that so lightly? Don’t you feel sad?” Facing the daily funerals of pets made her question whether he had become numb to it all.
“I do feel sadness, but some pains have healed long ago. Even when faced with life and death in the future, I can still remain indifferent.” Although he spoke with a smile, there was no warmth in it.
“I’m sorry for reminding you of your parents,” she said softly. After all, losing family was far more heartbreaking than losing a pet.
“It’s not that; they are very important to me after my stepparents.” A fleeting shadow crossed his eyes, subtle enough that Qiao Yuxiang didn’t miss it.
Very important? Was she a girlfriend or a wife?
Her acquaintance with Yan Kehe was still in its early stages, and her understanding of him remained limited to their professional interactions; she knew nothing of his private life.
"I think you resemble it quite a bit, especially in your eyes." As he spoke, he couldn't help but reach out with his large hand to tousle her hair, even struggling to suppress his feelings of affection as he gently pulled her closer, wanting to steal a kiss. But Qiao Yuxiang was clearly not someone who could be easily manipulated; she forcefully pushed away the "big bad wolf."
She was acutely aware that when she heard Yan Kehe's affirmative response, a wave of bitterness surged within her. This strange emotion made her feel extremely uncomfortable.
What did his teasing mean? Did he see her as a substitute for that girl?
She despised being a stand-in; if that were the case, she would rather forsake all tenderness.
"I'm going to work," she said, shaking off his hand with force and storming toward the front desk.
Xiao Nuo watched as Qiao Yuxiang transformed from a fragile girl into a fierce assistant, glancing at her somewhat flustered master and shaking her head helplessly.
Master, who would have thought such a shrewd person like you could slip up?
It seems you’ve been making a losing deal from the very beginning.
"Brother Kehe."
A soft yet jarring voice suddenly broke the tension. Qiao Yuxiang looked up to find the Seductive Woman standing there.
"The manager has stepped out for a moment due to some matters but should be back shortly. Please have a seat for now."
"Good riddance," the Seductive Woman said, her arms crossed over her chest, looking down at her with a haughty and arrogant expression. "Do you know how the previous assistant resigned?"
Seeing your smug demeanor, it's clear you used some tricks to drive her away, Qiao Yuxiang thought to herself. The Seductive Woman circled around her slowly, beginning to critique her appearance. "Your figure is utterly mediocre, lacking both breasts and curves. Oh, and the worst part is that your face is so forgettable."
"With a face that looks like a wanted criminal, you'll be remembered wherever you go! My average looks have nothing to do with you," Qiao Yuxiang shot back.
"Don't think that just because you're working in the shop now, you'll get any special treatment. As long as I'm here, don't even dream about it!" After spitting out her words with disdain, the Seductive Woman strutted out of the Pet Shop.
